As of May 15, here's where I believe we are with #Policy713: Roughly **92.5% of NB students** are protected by district education council policies that are more comprehensive than Hogan and 's revised #Policy713.Anglophone West and South have adopted alternate policies that say they will respect the Charter of Rights and Freedoms as well as the NB Human Rights Act. Since legal scholars told Lamrock that the revised policy violated both the Charter and NB HR Act; this means that DEC's will not enforce the parts that violate the rights of the students. This is a way for both of these DEC's to protect kids via the original policy conventions without explicitly defying Hogan. (Hogan could hardly object to their revised policy saying they'll protect Charter and human rights). • Anglophone East is standing firm on their revisions allowing all students to be informally accommodated if they don't have a parent's support. This is the ongoing saga in court where Hogan is now threatening to dissolve the Anglo East DEC for not updating its policy. • Francophone Nord-Est, Nord-Ouest and Sud are all sticking with the revised policy that allows middle schoolers and older to be informally accommodated if they don't have a parent's support. • Anglophone North is adhering to Hogan's revised version. If we look at enrolment numbers from 2022 to give us a rough idea of the distribution of the NB student population, this means that roughly 92.5% of NB students are protected by DEC policies that are more comprehensive than Hogan's revisions. Most the most part, these courageous district education councils deserve humungous credit for protecting the kids. Pass along some good feedback to your local district education council!! (unless you are in Anglophone North).
