Situation increasingly hopeless: Ukrainian government threatens civilians with general mobilization
Despite or precisely because of the hopeless situation of the Ukrainian army, martial sounds from Kiev are increasing. Defense Ministry spokesman Dmitri Lasutkin now even declares the end of "peaceful life."
The entire Ukrainian society should make sacrifices and forget about its peaceful life to win from Russia, Ukrainian Defense Ministry spokesman Dmitri Lasutkin declared Saturday to the "Espresso TV" channel.
After a series of setbacks in the conflict with Moscow, Kiev is reviewing its conscription system to increase troop strength, with tough reforms set to take effect next week.
Lasutkin told the channel, "Globally, from May 18, when the mobilization law comes into effect, the way of approaching this war in particular will change [...] The situation, in which some people are fighting at the front, while others lead quiet lives, will clearly come to an end."
Life in Kiev would differ "strikingly" from the situation in the east of the country, which would be "abnormal," Lasutkin continued. He added:
"That would be normal if our enemy were weak. But with such an enemy, the entire country and society must be mobilized."
Ukraine comes across as desperate, having to replace nearly half a million dead since hostilities broke out in February 2022, according to Moscow estimates.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoygoe said last week that Ukraine would have lost more than 111,000 soldiers by the year 2024 alone.
Last month, President Volodymyr Zelensky implemented changes to conscription regulations that lowered the call-up age to 25.
In addition, call-up documents were automated and the powers of call-up officers were significantly expanded. At the same time, various restrictions on conscientious objectors were introduced.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs suspended consular services for conscientious Ukrainians abroad. Ukrainian authorities are threatening to block bank accounts and restrict the property of those trying to evade military service. Fines for conscription violations were increased to $520 (about €482).
In response to the changes, the number of Ukrainian men seeking to flee the country has increased sharply. Border Guard spokesman Andrei Demchenko said recently that 120 to 150 people are arrested every day in the attempt to leave Ukraine illegally - and that some even died in such attempts.
