A game includes many characters, from the ones the player controls to the various enemies who show up throughout, including memorable bossess. A character artist's job is to create all of these characters.
While creating a visual design from the descriptions in the design documents, a character artist needs to fill in a lot of blanks where minor details haven't been included. This leaves a lot of room for creativity, and it can be a lot of fun.
Sometimes character artists even get a chance to create new characters from scratch, starting from the initial design phase!
Seeing your creation moving and fighting in the game world can be really exciting, and it's something that only a character artist can experience.
