Taking inspiration from design documents and discussions regarding game elements, create and propose visual designs.
Not restricted to only key visuals, concept artists work to create original designs for many different elements, including worldbuilding, character designs, gameplay elements, and more.
In addition to mobile elements like player characters, enemies, and animals, character designers also work to create various in-game 3D models such as weapons and other equipment.
More than simply bringing designs from 2D to 3D, character designers must understand and consider the character's nuances and background when creating a design, as well as how difficult the design will be to animate.
Beginning with animation designs for characters or events, animators really bring them to life.
Animation is in many ways linked directly to how good a game feels to play, so animators need to keep gameplay in mind as well as visuals.
Also known as the Effects team, in addition to natural elements like fire, water, and lightning, as well as dynamically-shifting elements like explosions and smoke, VFX artists also create symbolic visuals that help to make the game world easier to understand for players.
Visual effects can have a huge impact on the feel of gameplay and the game's sense of scale, contributing greatly to the overall quality of a game's presentation.
Using game design documents and concept art as a basis, environment designers build the world where the game will take place.
The work is wide-ranging, including a huge variety of models used in the environment as well as overall area layouts and lighting design, meaning environment designers must work closely with many other sections to create a world in which the player can become fully immersed.
UI designers design a game's UI (user interface) to display necessary information and game functionality in an intuitive way for the player, as it is the part of the game's design that the player interfaces with most directly.
Organizing the huge amount of information needed to see a game through from beginning to end, UI designers must work hard to create a UI that's comfortable and easy to use to provide the user with the best experience possible.
The Sound team designs and creates all types of sound used throughout a game. From the actual music, sound effects, and voices, to general design and implementation of the way sound is used, and recently even to controller vibration, sound designers engage in a wide range of tasks.
Each designer is able to focus on their strengths and specializations while working as a team to create a unified sound design.
A creative position in charge of designing scenarios, building worlds, and creating playable levels to create a something in which players can become immersed. Planners are the very first team members to get started on a new project, and they continue their tasks until the very end.
Important skills for a planner include the ability to visualize from early stages what the completed game will look like, as well as the ability to communicate and work together with teammates while creating games.
Programmers implement the ideas created by the director and planners, as well as assets produced by the designers.
Additionally, they create tools to support game development, and must be willing to actively research new skills and technologies.
They use the resources available to them to create the best experience possible.
