Gallant to Austin: "No choice" but to go ahead with Rafah invasion.
○ In a phone call yesterday evening, Israeli War Minister Yoav Gallant told US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin that Israel was left with “no choice” but to go ahead with an attack on Rafah, citing Hamas’ refusal to agree to a ceasefire deal as the reason.
○ Gallant also updated Austin on the Qassam Brigades' attack that targeted an Israeli army position near the Kerem Shalom crossing, killing four soldiers, the War Minister’s office said.
○ US and Israeli officials have framed the failure to achieve a ceasefire deal as Hamas’ unwillingness to negotiate and end the war, despite agreeing to “significant concessions.”
○ However, the ceasefire proposals presented to Hamas’ leadership have not yet met the basic demands put forth by the group for a permanent ceasefire, total Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and allowing for the immediate entry of aid and essential equipment into the strip.
