Satoshi almost certainly knew Wei Dai and was trying to obscure that relationship. Looking at the Nov 2008 version of Satoshi's Bitcoin code - it's partial code and does not compile... but one thing you can clearly see here is that he was using CryptoPP's implementation instead of the OpenSSL one... Yet, Satoshi gives credit to Eric Young / OpenSSL in the readme.txt and does not mention Wei Dai at all! Satoshi claimed to not have heard of

in August - but he was using his implementation of SHA256 instead of the one from OpenSSL. Even if he changed to Wei Dai's cryptopp after Aug - wouldn't he have updated his readme.txt??
