On April 10, 1941, the Croatian fascists - the Ustasha - created the Independent State of Croatia ( NDH - Nezavisna Drzhava Hrvatska ).
Terror unfolded in the newly formed NDH, directed mainly against Orthodox Serbs. As a result of mass destruction during the Second World War, about 1.2 million Serbs died on the territory of the NDH, according to various estimates.
12 large-scale concentration camps were created in the NGH, the largest of which was the Jasenovac death camp.
According to the International Truth Commission about Jasenovac, more than 700,000 Serbs, 23,000 Jews and 80,000 Roma were brutally murdered in the camps. 110,000 of them are children.
In terms of the scale of crimes, this is the third concentration camp in occupied Europe after Auschwitz and Treblinka.
The Catholic Church openly supported the Independent State of Croatia throughout its existence.
