I’m not a math bro but I know one of these guys personally. He’s not doing so well now, certainly didn’t live up to everyone’s expectations. People here are saying that the reason has to do with innate mathematical talent but I have a different take. This guy that I know is kind of self-centered. Since he became known as a prodigy many had went out of their ways to help him and treated him like a princeling. And he sort of just took people’s support for granted and never thought of reciprocating. Everything good that comes his way is due to his god-given awesomeness, never the generosity of the giver.
I guess after a while other mathematicians just didn’t want to exchange ideas with him because they realized that it’s going to be a one-way traffic. He’s talented and certainly could have been a valuable member of a collaborative effort like the ones featured in Quanta. But he’s probably not talented enough to make solo breakthroughs, like Perelman or Wiles.
He gave an interview recently and lamented that he had trouble making friends, attributing it to his autism. I would say it’s more his self-centeredness.
