Lesson learned: if you’re a lemon, it’s better to have Bhargava as your advisor, so you can at least get a Benjamin Pierce postdoc thanks to his BS letters.

It only prolonged the inevitable exit to a random industrial job.
We have seen this before (for example Tiankai Liu): IMO gold medalist --> Putnam fellow --> VHRM PhD with big-name advisor --> LRM postdoc with weak pub --> Disappear

lol why does this guy have a wikipedia page?
He was a winner of Scripps Spelling Bee, an IMO gold medalist, and a Putnam Fellow. He peaked early.

We have seen this before (for example Tiankai Liu): IMO gold medalist --> Putnam fellow --> VHRM PhD with big-name advisor --> LRM postdoc with weak pub --> DisappearI think the real issue was that basically his whole thesis area got scooped, and his advisor had a couple other decent students finishing that year, which was a double-whammy on the market.

Who scooped the thesis project? Nakagawa?

Liu got NSF postdoc. And Utah is not weak for the kind of geometry he was doing.

He is very Catholic. Best of all possible worlds.
Notre Dame will hire a weak candidate if they are Catholic.
Is Notre Dame math a hotbed of Catholicism? I've always had a pretty good impression of their department, and as far as I know none of the faculty I've met from there are Catholic (but it probably wouldn't come up in conversation I guess?). Presumably other parts of the university are way more hard-core.

there are some catholic profs in the math dept but I wouldn’t say it’s a hot bed
