Math is not like econ, the people there are more eccentric and open so they don't care if you voice disillusionment with it, as long as you churn out good work afterwards. I bet any top 5 department would give Perelman a job right now if he hinted for it. It's only in econ that you burn bridges by talking bad about the work.

Qiaochu Yuan : math PhD at Berkeley
Evan O'Dorney : math PhD at Princeton
Will Sawin : math PhD at Princeton + Columbia AP
Akhil Mathew : math PhD at HarvardO'Dorney is supposed to graduate this year. He will get PhD (or probably did already) but that's about it. Just look at his website. Those music composition stuff (which aren't very good) are just distractions to cover up his struggle to excel as a top-level mathematician. He got stuck publishing undergraduate-level papers. That's about it.
Nevertheless, having the IMO medal and putnam fellow thing will allow him to land a good position at one of the top quants.O'Dorney still hasn't graduated after another year. Since his prospect in academia is pretty dim, might as well graduate sooner and start making money as a quant. Unlike Qiaochu Yuan, O'Dorney has solid credentials from IMO/Putnam which will get him somewhere.
Random fact: Qinxuan Pan (the Yale murder suspect) was an IMO teammate of O'Dorney.He will graduate this spring. Is that good enough for you?

No country in the world, other than Turkey, recognizes Northern Cyprus. European Union does not recognize Northern Cyprus.
How Arran Fernandez ends up in Northern Cyprus is a strange story. According to a local interview, AF said he first came to N Cyprus as a graduate student to participate in an event to promote math. He was invited due to his early fame as a prodigy. He likes the place enough that he contacted EMUNC to ask if he could do a postdoc there. Because he is kind of famous, local people upgraded the postdoc position and hired him as an AP.
I simply do not find the story credible. More likely, AF failed to produce good results in research and moved to N Cyprus as his way out.

AF seems to have had an unusual thesis adviser at Cambridge who claimed to have proved the Lindelöf hypothesis - kind of one rank down from Michael Atiyah who claimed he'd proved Riemann.

In math, publishing one important paper in Annals/inventions/duke is regarded a lot more prestigious than publishing a bunch of side papars.
That's what Ashwin is going to do. His solo paper on the new bound of diagonal Ramsey number, if it checks out, will be in a top-3 journal. That's the reason he was featured in Quanta.

Some people really are reasonably congruent in their lives, non-hypocritical, and nice. Unfortunately, some others find that too strange to be credible. (See above.) They think the real true-to-their-nature human is competitive, uncritical of the current hierarchical social pyramid, racist, and an ahole.

They are undergrads who know enough about which are the top journals to publish in, but still have that sort of pride that comes from having topped their algebra classes in high school. Then they enter some Ivy League and realize there's so many geniuses around them, who are actually nice people who don't care about status so much. They start to badmouth their cohort mates online as a coping mechanism to their own inadequacy.
