MEHTAAB SAWHNEY is a first year student and has 30 papers.. wth
In combinatorics it's easy to publish a large number of papers. Sawney's most important papers were all coauthored with Ashwin Sah. On the other hand, Sah has a single-authored paper (on the new bound of diagonal Ramsey) which will make top-3 journal. So, Ashwin is still ahead of everyone in his cohort.

So the people who did better than them in grad school. Would those people have crushed the putnam if they prepped and participated or is it two skill sets that are not entirely correlated?
Putnam and research are different indeed, although there would be some correlation in outcomes.

Will Sawin : math PhD at Princeton + Columbia AP
Akhil Mathew : math PhD at HarvardO'Dorney is supposed to graduate this year. He will get PhD (or probably did already) but that's about it. Just look at his website. Those music composition stuff (which aren't very good) are just distractions to cover up his struggle to excel as a top-level mathematician. He got stuck publishing undergraduate-level papers. That's about it.
Nevertheless, having the IMO medal and putnam fellow thing will allow him to land a good position at one of the top quants.O'Dorney still hasn't graduated after another year. Since his prospect in academia is pretty dim, might as well graduate sooner and start making money as a quant. Unlike Qiaochu Yuan, O'Dorney has solid credentials from IMO/Putnam which will get him somewhere.
Random fact: Qinxuan Pan (the Yale murder suspect) was an IMO teammate of O'Dorney.
