How to get maximum from your Asus router — Part 3
In Part 3 we will look how to pimp up our router by installing custom software
In Part 1 of this guide we saw how to install ASUSWRT-MERLIN firmware, and in Part 2 how to connect to it via ssh. Now let’s look how we can install custom software with amtm (ASUSWRT-MERLIN Terminal Manager) and entware package manager for embedded devices.
Setting up amtm and preparing USB device
In order to install custom software we will need to find suitable storage first. Any old USB flash drive with few GB will do just fine for this purpose. Please note that you souldn’t have any data on it, as you would need to format it.
Let’s log in to our router with ssh, and type amtm
First we need to select amtm style. You can choose one based on your preference. I’ll just go with 1.
Next we need to format our USB drive, so type fd
and press enter.
You will get the warning that all of your data will be deleted, and to be on the safe side, you should unplug all our other USB drives before proceeding.
On the next screen we will need to confirm drive selection we are formatting
Now we need to select number of partitions, as we need ext4 we are going to select 1 partition.
On next screen for disk format we will select ext4.
