Klonoa Chronicles is a series of tweets by Klonoa’s original creator, Hideo Yoshizawa, that give insights into the development of the games he had a hand in making. Below is a translation along with the original Japanese text.

クロノアクロニクル　第１８回！ 今回は登場人物のなまえについての裏話を。

Klonoa Chronicles #18! This time, I’m going to tell you the story behind the characters’ names.

クロノアは私がゲーム創りの仕事を始めてからメイン企画として１０作目に当たる作品でした。 だから今までのゲーム創りの集大成にして記念作品にしようと密かに心に決めていました。 そして頭に浮かんだのは、あの不憫な子「ラディア戦記」でした。

Klonoa was my 10th main project since I started making games. So I had secretly decided to make it the culmination of all the games I had made up to that point, and to make it a commemorative work. What came to mind was that unfortunate child “Radia Senki”.

そこで登場人物の名前をシナリオの段階では仮ではありますが、ラディア戦記の登場人物の名前を多く使っています。 その後スタッフがデザインイメージに合わせて変えたものもありましたが、結構製品にも残っていたので密かに喜んでいました。

So we used many of the names of the characters from Radia Senki, although the names of the characters were tentative in the scenario stage. Some of them were later changed by the staff to match the design image, but they remained in the product quite a bit, so we were secretly happy with them.

クロノアの相棒のヒューポーは、ラディアの森の精霊ヒューポーから。 この森の精霊は、伐採された木を元に戻すために、夜中に森に行き、文句も言わずに自分を犠牲にして木に変身する、涙ぐましいキャラクターなんですよ。

Klonoa’s sidekick, Huepow, is from Hyupas, the forest spirit of Radia. This forest spirit is a tearjerker character who goes to the forest in the middle of the night to restore the trees that have been cut down, and then sacrifices himself to transform into a tree without complaint.

そしてこのヒューポーは実は元は子供の頃にテレビで放映されていた外国のアニメで、ハンナバーバラの「怪獣王ターガン」というのがあるのですが、その登場キャラクターのヒューヒューとポーポーから発想したものなのです。 画面写真の中のニョロっとした生き物がそうです。

 And Hyupas’ name was actually inspired by a foreign animation that aired on television when I was a child, Hanna Barbara’s “Targan the Monster King” (This is an American cartoon from the 1960s known as The Herculoids), which was inspired by the characters Hyûhyû (Gloop in English) and Bôbô (Gleep in English). These are the blob-like creatures seen below in this picture.

歌姫レフィスはラディア戦記で飛空艇に乗って逃げてきた姫の名前です。 飛空艇で逃げてきて墜落するのも一緒なんですよ。 ちなみにこの取説のイラストは当時テクモのデザイン部にいて、少年ジャンプで「地獄戦士魔王」というギャグマンガを描いていた苅部誠くんなんです！

Diva Lephise is the name of the princess who escaped in a flying boat in Radia Senki. It’s the same one that escaped and crashed in the airship. By the way, the game’s manual was illustrated by Makoto Karibe, who worked in the design department of Tecmo at the time, and drew a gag manga called “Hell Warrior Demon King” for Shonen Jump!

バルーはラディア戦記に登場する山賊の親分で、チビだけど喧嘩っ早いキャラでしたが、クロノアではレフィスに憧れる石工のおじさんでした。随分変わったものです（笑）。 つづく

Barū (Balue) was the leader of the bandits in Radia Senki, a short but quarrelsome character, but in Klonoa he was an older stone mason with a crush on Lephise. It’s very different (laughs).
