Fairbanks, Alaska This week we’re in Alaska with scientists studying climate change in the Arctic and boreal regions as part of

@NASA

’s Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) mission.

Welcome to Golden Dome! Like most caves here at Lava Beds National Monument, this one follows the path of an ancient lava flow. Over time, some parts of the underground tunnel have collapsed, creating entrances like this one.

Getting to the lava tube is no walk in the park, unless of course you’re at

. Here in Hawaii, we see ʻaʻā and pāhoehoe. ʻAʻā forms when the lava cools quickly. The rocks are rubble piles with actual glass in them that gets stuck to your pants, like sharp Velcro.
