"We came all this way to explore the Moon, and the most important thing is that we discovered the Earth" –Bill Anders, Apollo 8 astronaut "Earthrise," one of the most powerful photos in ’s history, was taken by Anders #OTD in 1968 as the Apollo 8 crew orbited the Moon.
The Earthrise photo taken by Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders shows the Moon's surface in the foreground with the Earth appearing above the horizon in the distance in the blackness of space. About 2/3 of the Earth is lit from by the Sun and you can see the ocean, clouds, and a continent on the lit portion.

50 years ago today, Gene Cernan became the last person to stand on the Moon. Before his return to the #Apollo17 lunar module, he said: “We leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind. Godspeed the crew of Apollo 17.” #Apollo50th

With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to rear admiral and astronaut Ken Mattingly. His brave contributions providing critical decisions to rescue the Apollo 13 crew, and serving as a key player in the Apollo and early Shuttle programs will long be remembered. #RIP 🫡

The crew of Apollo 8 took this photo, later dubbed "Earthrise," #Today in 1968. During a broadcast that night, pilot Jim Lovell said "The vast loneliness is awe-inspiring and it makes you realize just what you have back there on Earth."

42 years ago #today, Voyager I captured this historic image-- the first time the Earth and Moon had been photographed in the same frame. 11.66 million kilometers (7.25 million miles) from Earth, the spacecraft was directly above Mt. Everest at the time.
