But why? We say it takes 365 days for Earth to orbit the Sun, but it’s more like 365.25 (where 1 day = 1 rotation of Earth on its axis). To make up the time, we add a day about every 4 years. go.nasa.gov/49Pg1jF

Earthrise. On Christmas Eve of 1968, the Apollo 8 crew photographed Earth rising over the lunar surface as they orbited the Moon. “We came all this way to explore the Moon, and the most important thing is that we discovered the Earth." – William Anders go.nasa.gov/3GcD3F4

Against the blackness of space, Earth is seen rising over the lunar surface, which is gray and full of craters in the foreground. The lower part of the globe is in shadow, but the rest of Earth is mostly blue water with swirling white clouds and a few patches of brown land.

In Spain, a drought turns the world’s largest olive oil producing region brown. NASA’s Terra satellite shows where green vegetation in May 2022 (left) turned brown by May 2023 (right). The drought dried up reservoirs, parched olive groves, and led to water restrictions.

The Paraguaná Peninsula in #Venezuela is rich with sandy beaches and interesting topography. earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/148162/

The image above was acquired on October 18, 2020, by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on the Landsat 8 satellite. A sliver of green lines the highest points in the center of the peninsula: the Santa Ana Ridge rises up to 830 meters (2,700 feet) above sea level. Thorny plants live at lower elevations, while deciduous forests and woody plants grow at higher elevations. The area was designated the Cerro Santa Ana Natural Monument in 1972.
