Galaxy collisions are the ultimate in slow-motion stunts. ⏱️ When a pair of galaxies encounters each other, it takes 1-2 billion years for them to merge and settle down. The stars already in the galaxies don’t change much, but the collision can spark lots of new stars to form! ✨
This image is of 12 different galaxy collisions taken by Hubble Space Telescope.

There are planets everywhere we look: 5,000 and counting. Even with so many worlds discovered outside our solar system, Earth is still the only one we know of that’s just right for human life. Learn more: exoplanets.nasa.gov

Our universe is speckled with stars, with billions just in our galaxy. Some stars live alone or in twos or threes, but others are bound together by gravity into much larger communities. In honor of ’s exploration of #StarrySights, let’s talk about star clusters! 🧵 1/6
This image is a multiwavelength view of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), one of the Milky Way's closest galactic neighbors. X-ray data from NASA’s Chandra telescope data is shown in purple, optical data from Hubble is shown in red, green and blue, and infrared data from Spitzer is shown in red. The image is dominated by a massive open circle of hazy brownish-pink clouds with dozens of larger, bright white and pink objects inside of it. The edges of the image are speckled with dimmer stars, galaxies, and other objects on a black background. The image is watermarked with the words “Credits: X-ray: NASA/CXC/Univ.Potsdam/L.Oskinova et al; Optical: NASA/STScI; Infrared: NASA/JPL-Caltech.”

While black holes don’t emit light, their influence can be seen. Swirling gas, energetic jets, and even ripples in space-time give them away. Follow this thread to learn how different observatories help us study black holes! #BlackHoleFriday

If you’re a cat lover, there’s little better than tiny toe-beans, but how about these ginormous ones that we found in the Milky Way? They're actually part of a star-forming region roughly 5,000 light-years away known as the Cat’s Paw Nebula. Isn't this purrfect?
At 5,500 light-years distant, Cat's Paw is an emission nebula with a red color that originates from an abundance of ionized hydrogen atoms. Alternatively known as NGC 6334, stars nearly ten times the mass of our Sun have been born there in only the past few million years. Pictured here is a deep field image of the Cat's Paw Nebula in light emitted by hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur. Credit: S. Lipinski/NASA & ESA

💍 Ring galaxies are thought to form when a smaller galaxy punches through a larger galaxy at just the right angle. The beautiful ring is made of newly formed stars sparked by the gas and dust pushing outward from the collision. #MondayMotivation
Collage of four ring galaxies. These galaxies show up as a circle or oval of bright, clumpy matter. In one of them, there is a bright spiral-looking center. Another has a bright smudge at the center. The other two are dark in the middle.
