In Dec 2023, 莆田市城厢区库马网络科技有限公司 in Putian, Fujian, China, submitted an application to the Trademark Office of China National Intellectual Property Administration to trademark the Kanji name of Japanese professional baseball pitcher Shohei Ohtani (大谷翔平) — the $700M designated hitter for the Los Angeles Dodgers — for use in clothing products in China.
The Chinese company claims that they don’t know Shohei Ohtani is a baseball player and that it’s purely a coincidence they’re trademarking 大谷翔平 — Shohei Ohtani’s name in Kanji.
