The purpose is to expose the inappropriate behavior displayed by John VanDenBerg on numerous occasions(here and here) and the method by which the behavior was addressed and communicated amongst The Friends.

An issue to be addressed is a proclaimed unawareness of the behavior. The blatant, out in the open, inappropriate touching is considered grooming. While people claim to be unaware or recently coming to learn about CSA now, sounds disingenuous. Some workers had communicated to various friends with young children, to keep an eye on John. There were instances wherein workers observed John touching or inappropriately being in a young girls space.

While the behavior was overlooked or considered resolved, John’s behavior did not change, even after being confronted and subsequently warned. How is this even considered repentance, while his behavior continues? By NOT bringing his behavior to light and taking strong measures, as in exiting him from the work the first time it occurred, MAYBE others would not have received the JVDB experience? How many others are there?

Finally, measures and processes need to be in place to communicate to ALL the friends, clearly and concisely, when this type of behavior is observed. People, all people, need to know and be aware. Removing the subterfuge, which has plagued this specific issue/behavior in the past, is required.

While I have NO DOUBT there are some CSAs within the faith, the evidence on this site is lacking. I have numerous similar pictures of myself with my parent’s friends during the 80s and NONE of them ever touched me. Times were very different back then and we can not and should not try to retroactively apply today’s standards to past actions. You do understand that this man has had his life RUINED, right? I don’t know him, but there is simply not enough evidence here to be certain he did anything at all. Because of this inconvenient fact, you should be VERY careful that you aren’t actually bearing false witness. Due to some very real incidents, it feels like people are looking for more sin everywhere and anywhere. That’s literally called a witch hunt. As God will be judging your actions and works, I’d think twice before openly accusing someone of such heinous things without any real evidence. I find this very concerning when there are likely very real abusers and victims out there. You run the risk of putting REAL accusations under suspicion by posting possible fake ones without substantiating facts. If you have more (real) evidence, you should post it. What you have now is not enough and makes it looks like you’re destroying a person for no reason.

I mean, did you ever stop to think that he simply needed to support himself from falling over when he knelt down to take a pic? This is a tiny snapshot in time and in no way reflects what happened before or after. Context is crucial, and you have none. He kissed a girl? Where on her body?? In what way? For how long? Because if he just dropped a kiss on her head, that was very common back then. My grandma would have been a rapist because she did it to every cute kid she saw. You should really rethink what you’re doing. And I mean that in a caring way. I’m afraid for you, that you will be judged harshly by God. Very harshly.

  That is definitely a perspective and still not an excuse to pass it off as no big deal.
  
  Do some of your own asking of other workers, and see what you learn. His behavior required he step aside. He had been warned on numerous occasions, and did not heed the warnings.
  
  And from a godly perspective, god will look after him, right? And if that is the case, what’s the big deal? It will be a learning opportunity for JVDB. Learning is a GREAT thing.

    Will I agree on labeling him as a pedophile is not accurate, his actions from the early 1990’s to 2023 are INAPPROPRIATE. Hardly worthy of the “ministry”.
    
    One glaring question, WHY did others overlook, blow-off his inappropriate behavior? How is it that other ministers and parishioners did NOT call him out?
    
    To ignore and cover-up have led to the current state of affairs.
