Klonoa Chronicles #48

Klonoa Chronicles is a series of tweets by Klonoa’s original creator,Hideo Yoshizawa, that give insights into the development of the games he had a hand in making. Below is a translation along with the original Japanese text.

クロノアクロニクル第４８回！ 今回も幕間の月の国クレス復活のムービーについてです。 

Klonoa Chronicles #48! Again, this time it’s about the movie of the resurrection of Cress, the Moon Kingdom in the interlude movie. 

ＣＧ制作会社のビルドアップが乗りに乗って制作してくれたおかげでとてもいい月の国復活ムービーができました。 しかし、やはりクロノアの登場するシーンは難しいので、結局由水くんのチームでやることになりました。

Thanks to Buildup, a CG production company, we were able to make a very good movie about the revival of the Moon Kingdom. However, the scene with Klonoa was still difficult, so it was decided it’d be done by Mr. Yoshimizu’s team.

でもクレス復活はかなり迫力のあるシーンが創れたし、クロノアがパメラに乗って月の国へと飛び立つシーンもクオリティの高いものにできたのでよかったと思ってます。

But I’m glad that I was able to create a very powerful scene of Cress’ resurrection, and a high-quality scene of Klonoa flying away to the Moon Kingdom on Pamela.

このムービーができた時、予算を決裁してくれた部長に自慢げに見せに行ったのですが、その時の反応は「ン千万円かけて、これだけ？」というものでした。 これはゲームのプレイの中に入ったら、どれだけ効果的かがわからなかったのでしょうね。 「費用に見合う効果は必ずあります！」と断言しました。

When the movie was completed, I proudly went to show it to the director who had approved the budget, and his response was, “This is all you can do after spending tens of millions of yen?” That was the reaction I got. I guess he didn’t realize how effective it would be if it were part of the game play. I assured them, "It will be worth the cost!” I assured them.

内心は「ン億円かかってる『鉄拳』のエンディングよりはずっと効果的なお金の使い方だと思うけどね」と思いましたが、大人なので言いませんでした（笑）。

Inwardly, I thought, “This is a much more effective use of money than the ending of Tekken, which cost a billion yen”, but I was an adult and didn’t say anything (laughs).

今回はこのムービーを制作してくれたビルドアップが描き起こしてくれた絵コンテと、最後のクロノアがパメラに乗って月の国に向かうまでの由水くんの絵コンテを公開します。

This time, I’d like to share with you the storyboard drawn up by Buildup, who produced this movie, as well as Yoshimizu’s storyboard of the last part, when Klonoa rides Pamela to the Moon Kingdom.
