Klonoa Chronicles is a series of tweets by Klonoa’s original creator, Hideo Yoshizawa, that give insights into the development of the games he had a hand in making. Below is a translation along with the original Japanese text.

クロノアクロニクル　第２８回！ 今週は先週に引き続き、ムービー班の由水くんのエンディング最終稿の絵コンテを公開します！

Klonoa Chronicles #28! This week, continuing from last week, we’re releasing the storyboard for the final draft of the ending by Yoshimizu of the Movie Team!

先週はここまででしたよね。 

We saw this last week, didn’t we?

ロングになって、二人が離れた瞬間、アップから次元の穴に吸い込まれていくクロノアのカットに切り替わるのがまた、絶妙のタイミングなんですよね。 

Before long the two separate. The cut from the close-up to the cut of Klonoa being sucked into the dimensional hole is perfectly timed.

うつむくヒューポー。 

Huepow looks down…

そしてレフィスの歌声がクライマックスを迎える。それはビジョンの切り替わりでいつも聞いていた村人たちが奏でるあの曲だ！と追い打ちをかけます。 

Then Lephise’s singing reaches its climax. It’s followed by the tune played by the villagers you rescued between each vision!

世界は再生してめでたし、めでたしなのに、ヒューポーの心は複雑に揺れ動く。 それまでのクロノアとの思い出が走馬灯のように頭に蘇ってきた事でしょう。 そして涙をこらえ、これで良かったんだと、クロノアを笑顔で送ってあげようと頑張って笑みをつくる。ここでは涙がありますね。 

The world is reborn and all is well, but Huepow’s heart is in a complicated state of flux. The memories of Klonoa up to that point must have come flooding back to his mind like a runaway light. Huepow, holding back tears, smiles and says, “This was the right thing to do,” and tries his best to send Klonoa off with a smile. There are tears here, aren’t there?

一瞬強い風が吹いてマントがたなびいた瞬間ページがめくれてストップモーションになるタイミングも秀逸です。 

The timing is also excellent: the moment a strong wind blows for a moment and the cloak flutters, the pages turn over and the scene goes into stop motion.

そしてストーリーを逆にたどってページを遡っていき、ついにはあの創られた出逢いの記憶のシーンまで戻る。今となってはこの出逢いも実際の思い出だと言ってもいいんじゃないかと思えた所で本の表紙に。 そこにはプレイヤーの名前が記されています。だってクロノアはプレイヤーの分身なのだから。 

And then we follow the story in reverse, going backwards through the pages, finally returning to the memory scene of that created encounter. Just when you think it’s safe to say that this encounter is now an actual memory, you come to the cover of the book. The player’s name is written there, because Klonoa is the player’s alter ego.

実はクロノアのストーリーには込められたもうひとつの思いがあるのです。それについては次回にお話ししようと思います。 つづく
