Klonoa Chronicles #24

Klonoa Chronicles is a series of tweets by Klonoa’s original creator, Hideo Yoshizawa, that give insights into the development of the games he had a hand in making. Below is a translation along with the original Japanese text.

クロノアクロニクル　第２４回！ 今回は特別にエンディング作成にあたって私が描いたラフ絵コンテを大公開！！

Klonoa Chronicles #24! This time, I’m going to show you the rough storyboard I drew for the ending!

わたしがビジュアルチームやムービーチームにエンディングの内容を伝えるために描いた超ラフ絵コンテ。 失敗コピー紙の裏に描いてますね。 とにかく清書している時間がなかったので、その辺にあった紙の裏になぐり描きして説明したんですね。

A very rough storyboard I drew to tell the visual and movie teams what the ending would be. Anyway, I didn’t have time to do a clean copy, so I explained it by sketching on the back of some pieces of paper I had lying around.

セリフは最初の所だけ書いてますが、後は口頭で説明したので書いてないのです。 この時点では王子体形のヒューポーはなかったのでリングの精のままリングから顔を出して話していますね（笑）。

I only wrote the first part of the lines, but the rest was explained verbatim, so I didn’t write it. At this point, there was no Huepow in princely form, so he talks by sticking his face out of the ring as the spirit of the ring (laughs).

What it roughly says on this page from top left down:

(Fade in from white as Lephise is saved)
Villagers: Hooray!
Klonoa: What’s wrong?
Huepow: …I have to tell you something.
Klonoa: Eh?
(Ease out) Huepow: …Shady… this world is not your reality.
(Ease in) Klonoa: Eh?!

そしてレフィスの歌がいつもの村人の歌のフレーズになり、世界が再生していきます。 この時点では何と再生の歌によってじっじも生き返ってます！ 時間と作業量の関係でカットになってしまいましたが。

Then Lephise’s song becomes the usual phrase of the villagers’ song, and the world is reborn. At this point, to my surprise, the Song of Rebirth brings Grandpa back to life! Due to time and the amount of work involved, it had to be cut.

現実の世界にクロノアの冒険の書とリングが残されてFINというのはそのままです。 よくこのラフな殴り書きがあの素晴らしいムービーになったものだと、改めてスタッフの優秀さを思い知りますね。 つづく

The fact that the book of Klonoa’s adventure and the ring are left in the real world with FIN is still there. I am amazed how this rough draft turned into that wonderful ending movie, and once again I am reminded of the excellence of the staff. To be continued.
