Is a New Era of Mobile Really Here With Galaxy S24 AI?
What the Samsung Galaxy S24 should teach Apple about innovation
The Samsung Galaxy S24 launch promo is dramatic, and it is all about innovation using AI. According to Samsung, a new era is dawning, not just for its flagship phone, but for all mobile computing.
If that’s even vaguely true, Apple should be nervous. Apple’s obsession with expensive computerised goggles may have given Samsung an opening.
It could steal a dramatic lead in Apple’s core iPhone market. You know, the one where half of Apple’s revenue comes from.
And not just a lead in units sold or revenue raised. Samsung could become the thought-leader of mobile, setting the agenda. Catch us, if you can, Apple.
On the face of it, Samsung may have something if it has cracked AI. AI on iPhone, rightly or wrongly, equates to SirI, and — you know — Siri has room for improvement. There are other AI features on the iPhone, but no one shouts about them.
But does Samsung AI live up to the hype? How well do the S24’s features really work, and do they offer practical benefits? A new era will need all the answers to be, yes.
This iPhone enthusiast of 17 years decided to investigate.
Samsung’s new AI features
Samsung’s claims for its latest flagship smartphone are impressive. Summarising the AI features advertised in Samsung’s promotional video, the new S24 offers:
- Language processing using an on-device LLM.
- Live Translation: real-time translation of voice calls.
- AI Camera: enhanced photo and video capture.
- AI Photo Editing: featuring generative fill.
- Circle to Search, which lets you look up anything that appears on the screen.
As we’ll see, hands-on reviews of the new smartphone reveal that some of these features leave room for improvement. However, it will also become clear that Samsung has innovated.
