If you want to see how agitators, trolls and bots use this platform to simultaneously spread disinformation, hijack the “stop Asian hate” movement and direct targeted ethnonationalist harassment when their bullshit is called out then here is an example I can unpack as a teachable moment. has resurfaced in which Pelosi is telling the group of white women to “go back to China where your headquarters are” in reference to the NYT investigation that uncovered this org’s funding source. Not the best choice of words for obvious historically charged reasons. It was edited into a 2 second sound bite of just “Go back to China” and this is what agitators like this “Cindy Lim” person runs with. Seeing that I have several mutual followers with her, I shared the full clip but it turns out she had a narrative she wanted to put out there. That’s where the hijacking of the “stop Asian hate” part comes in. Chinese government disinformation campaigns weaponize our free and open society to sew disinformation by having agitators like this cry “anti-Asian hate” while simultaneously suppressing the voices of their own citizens overseas. So the only voices we’re left hearing are these agitators, bots and trolls. They aren’t reflective of the Chinese people I know, but they definitely are the only ones we’re hearing which in turn actually exacerbates anti-Asian sentiment. Lastly, the subsequent targeted harassment ensues when she goes into an anti-Taiwanese diatribe, screenshots my tweet and feeds it to all the trolls. Because nothing sets off an ethnonationalist like this more than someone who calls themselves Taiwanese American. What these groups are counting on is that targeting ethnonationalist harassment at those who see through their act will silence them so they can continue to spread their disinformation and exacerbate tensions.
