Modern thinkers have attempted to find some optimism when facing meaning and values because they think reason reveals life to be pointless. Non- Reason provides meaning. We must first define Existentialism!

Non- Reason = Faith/Optimism

Reason = Pessimism

• These were the ideas of many modern thinkers. Music had a major influence on thoughts and ideas and later on, eastern religion.
• These were just ways of filling a void.
• They were longing for meaning and purpose because they were not meant for this world but an eternal world.
• “If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world.” -C. S. Lewis

Meaning that the modern age is in a constant pursuit to fill the hole that is really longing for the eternal. Thus we make systems to look beyond it and obtain value and meaning without having to acknowledge any absolute. What we know is that you cannot do this without God because only he can fill the eternal longing. Not by any system, music, theology, art or eastern religion.

• Religion is something that you actually believe to be true, not enough to live your life by
• But is simply there to help you through life.

• People then find themselves clinging to things like:
• Drugs
• Music
• Art
• Eastern Religion
• Cults

VS.

• Modern thinkers are convinced that reason only leads to pessimism
• Reason only leads to facts and truth about the world and how man is just a machine. We have no value and no significance.
• Many say they believe this but do not live as if they have no meaning or value so they must leap to the top level.

If we were machines, modern man could not have its tensions but he does so you must leap away from reason.

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry

for Tomorrow We Die?

• With no personal God all is dead.
• We cry out for meaning and purpose and we look for it in other things because the world is cold and painful and we can't understand the point to life if we just die at the end.
• If there was no purpose to life then as humans we would Maximize pleasure and minimize pain.
