Distribution

Linux Mint 21 Cinnamon

Package version

5.4.8

Frequency

Always

Bug description

After two weeks of normal use, Cinnamon has written 145 GB to my local solid-state drive (SSD). This is not good for the long-term health of an SSD.

Screenshot from 2024-01-21 09-21-33 excessive disk writes

Yes, I know, gvfsd-metadata is still multiple times as bad, but the 145 GB by Cinnamon can be easily eliminated.

Steps to reproduce

Normal activities for a few days. Task switching using Alt+Tab and the taskbar, and web browsing.

Expected behavior

Cinnamon should write 0 bytes to disk, unless settings are changed and for good purposes such as debug logging. Everything else should happen inside RAM. There is no need for a user interface to write 145 GB.

Additional information

In spite of any criticism, keep in mind I am very thankful for the volunteer effort put into creating this user interface. It is a warm entry for Windows users to the Linux world.
