#sailor moon #arcade game #japan #japanese arcadeこれもチェックしよう!
I went back by that old Sailor Moon arcade game I found in Shinsekai, Osaka to have a try. Thankfully it was open at 8am! (Not sure if this sketchy little arcade ever closes.) I am guessing this probably isn’t the original cabinet but I am not sure.
I haven’t played this kind of play to win arcade game since I was a kid. I couldn’t even beat the first stage boss on one coin! But I did get a space on the leaderboard and boosted Sailor Moon to most popular character on the game (she’s gloating to Mars on the last screen).
Nowadays, instead of letting you play for as long as you can stay alive, most arcade games in Japan seem to run for a specific time limit (one battle, one song, etc) to give you an equal amount of play for each coin.
Which is kinda nice if you suck at arcade games, but it made me stop and think about how much arcade culture has changed since the 80s and 90s.
Some hand-made Sailor Moon pouches and napkins I bought at a festival booth. (^^)
Nowadays in Japan, Sailor Moon is totally retro and merchandise only shows up in the most random of places!
While I was out looking for Aikatsu cards, I ended up picking up this random grab bag of Sailor Moon S and SuperS cards. At first I thought they were for an ancient arcade game but upon closer inspection I think they’re just random trading cards. Lots of holographic and non-holographic versions. Some repeats. One of the holographic cards is literally made of metal, the one with Usagi and Minako staring down Haruka and Michiru in the front. None of the others are like that.
But yeah if anyone has any context for these cards I’d be interested to know.
Owning a Sailor Moon figurine or doll has been a personal holy grail of mine for the past 15 years or so. It was never something I wanted to buy off of eBay, but it was always on the back of my mind every time I visited a used toy shop.
Sailor Moon is quite rare in Japan. Even as famous as it is worldwide, when the Sailor Moon anime ended, its merchandise went out of production and faded into obscurity. Not all of it is particularly valuable (unless you’re talking about the transformation items and weapons), but generally speaking even though Sailor Moon merchandise is not always expensive you don’t see it every day.
The secret to owning it is just being able to find it, which takes a lot of know how and a lot of patience. This gem, discovered in a small corner of a hobby shop, only cost me about $6 but boy was she worth it.
She’s in perfect condition, too! Even though she was out of her box, she actually came with her original stickers and instructions. Who would keep those? Who would think, oh if I’m going to resell this figurine someday I better keep the instructions or whoever buys it won’t know where the head goes.
Anyway, she’s Super Sailor Moon too. Super Sailor Moon was always my favorite. She’ll be punishing bad guys in the name of the moon on my nightstand from here on out until forever more.
Found this gem in a sketchy old used toy store in semi-rural Japan. I’ve always wanted a Sailor Moon doll and she is gorgeous!
Have been scouring for information on her, but so far all I’ve been able to discover is that she’s part of the “Sailor Moon Mini Collection” dolls in the Sailor Moon World line, which was apparently produced during the PSGM era. If anyone else can tell me anything more specific I’d love to know, particularly her value, as opening the package and playing with all her cute little accessories is just too tempting!
…Note the shopkeeper attached a Yu-Gi-Oh card to the top of the package in order to punch a hole in it so he could hang her up in the store. Eh?
A Sailor Moon S trash can I picked up at a small market. I love finding Sailor Moon stuff, the more random the better. Pretty Soldiers now defend my trash from evil.
Oh man you’ll never believe what I found in Akihabara today. Friggin’ Sega GameGear. I’ve only been searching for one of these for something like 15 years, hahah.
Testing it out with a Sailor Moon S game. It’s totally a beat ‘em up. :D In the name of the moon, I will punish you!!
This game has a fortune telling feature rendered useless by the inability to enter dates after 1999. And it was made in the 90s! Why couldn’t 90s people think more than 5 years in the future?!
A friend of mine went to the Sailor Moon Crystal in Namja Town event! She let me share her pictures.
