Smart Mugs

Coffee can quickly turn tepid in a traditional mug. Could a smart mug that promises to keep it hot solve that problem?

Ember Mug², 14 oz

This smart mug is simple to set up and easy to use, and when used with its app, it is the most accurate model we tested. It kept coffee at the temperatures we set for an average of 70 minutes and within our ideal temperature range of 130 to 160 degrees for an average of 90 minutes. We liked that the app sent an alert when the coffee had reached our set temperatures. It charged in just 2 hours, one of the shortest charging times in our lineup. We also liked its built-in safety features; it automatically “sleeps” when it’s empty or after 2 hours of inactivity. If you don’t have a smartphone, you can still use this mug: It’s programmed to maintain a temperature of 135 degrees, though when we tested this function the temperature remained closer to 130 degrees.

What You Need To Know

Every morning I pour myself a cup of hot coffee. Then I go about my usual routine of feeding our dog and reading through emails, and when I return to take a sip of my coffee, it’s often tepid. At this point, I usually choose between reheating the coffee in my microwave (which will likely result in bitter, astringent coffee) or quickly drinking down the lukewarm brew before it gets any cooler. Neither is very appealing. Enter smart mugs. These devices, which often work with a smartphone app, can reportedly keep a hot beverage at a specific temperature for an extended period of time. My team and I were intrigued, so we purchased three models to test. Two models were made of ceramic-coated stainless steel and one was made of bone china. All were priced from about $79 to about $165. In addition to evaluating their ability to keep our coffee at the perfect temperature, we considered how easy the mugs were to set up and noted if they were comfortable to hold, pleasant to drink from, durable, and easy to clean.

The Smartshow Smart Temperature Control Ceramic Mug Warmer

This model was easy to set up and use. Its long-lasting battery kept coffee at the temperatures we set for an average of 40 minutes and within our ideal temperature range for an average of 80 minutes. Its well-insulated ceramic-coated stainless-steel walls kept our coffee hot. This mug was less accurate than our winner—it often ran about 5 degrees hotter than the set temperature. This wasn't a deal breaker, but it's good to keep in mind when choosing the set temperature. It also takes about 6 hours to charge, three times longer than our winner.

Glowstone smart mug

This mug, made from beautiful bone china, was a pleasure to drink from. The temperature setting wasn’t adjustable; instead, the mug is programmed to maintain a temperature from 140 to 149 degrees, which is in line with our preferred temperature range for drinkable coffee. Unfortunately, the battery didn't last long, and the mug kept our coffee hot for only 30 minutes—just 15 minutes longer than a regular mug. Another gripe we had was the confusing system of red dashes that appeared on the side of the mug. They were meant to communicate different messages, but we constantly needed to refer back to the manual to decode the system. Lastly, this was the only model to chip when we dropped it from 6 inches above a countertop and the only smart mug we couldn’t use while it was sitting on its charging coaster, as it will automatically shut off.

Model Number: GS102CLA, classic blue

Capacity: 11½ fl oz

Material: Fine bone china

Charging Time: Approximately 2 hours

Temperature Range: 140–149°F

Adjustable Temperature: No

Average Time Coffee Remained Within 130–160°F When Mug Was Fully Charged: 30 minutes

In addition to these insanely expensive smart mugs there are a variety of basic mug warmers (basically a little hot pad on your desk to keep mugs you already have on) that I would love to see tested, since those are usually under $25,
