“…the sight of Elon Musk charging towards Wikipedia with his trademark guile and delicacy was so predictable that it was almost relaxing. He saw a collective resource that people prized and he wanted to hurt it.”

Thoth knows Wikipedia’s not perfect, but I’d sooner have it handy than not have it.

Hey, you know how we spent 7.99 at Tumblr for useless blue checkmarks mainly to spite Musk? Maybe we should go donate the same amount to Wikipedia out of spite. And also because Wikipedia is far more useful than the accurately-named useless blue checks.

I mean, same spite, but actually getting something in return? Sounds like a deal to me…

GO DONATE TO WIKIPEDIA BEFORE ITS TOO LATE

Little boy standing in the stroller just looked around the crowded coffee shop, pointed at me and asked his mom “What’s HIS name” and his mom said “I don’t know!” and he asked me “What’s YOUR name” and I called back “I’m Al” across the whole coffee shop and he went “HI AL!”

As we were leaving like three people called out “Bye Al!” I’ve decided I love humanity.

its dangerous to go alone. here, take these bilbies

the head & shoulders of a bilby wrapped in a blanket. their big long ears are akimbo with the light shining through them, their grey fur looks very soft, and their expression is mildly perturbed. they have beady black eyes and a nose with fine whiskers on it that narrows to a round little pointALT
a bilby standing in what looks like red australian desert sand, having just emerged from under a log. Their head is lifted up so we can see their two tiny pig like nostrils on the end of their pointed whiskery snoutALT
a bilby in profile, held in someone's hands. their ears are laid down and their mouth is wide open in what i assume might be an indignant protest, or perhaps the song of their people. they might be quite young, because what teeth they have are adorably tiny and their mouth looks very gummyALT
two baby bilbies held on their backs in two cupped hands, back to back, looking very sleepy. their eyes are closed & their liddle kangaroo-like hind legs are sticking up in the air.ALT

Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House was published sixty years ago today. The novel begins with one of the best openings I have ever read:

“No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.”
