PM don’t preach: Stand on Hamas attack shows change in India’s foreign policy

The blind hatred of Israel that was a feature of official foreign policy in the past has been replaced by the clear understanding that close ties with Israel are in India’s self-interest

One of the best foreign policy decisions of the Narendra Modi government was to ration the global distribution of India’s huge reserves of piousness. While US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and a host of European dignitaries were showering gratuitous advice on Israel to fight its deadly war against Hamas with compassion for civilians, India’s external affairs minister was bolstering India’s strategic partnership with Vietnam and Singapore.
At the time of writing, neither had India given Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu lessons in statecraft, nor had it given its opinion on the vexed question of who bombed the car park of the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza. Instead, New Delhi has done what it is best at doing: Evacuate its students and citizens back home from the war zone.
