Just for fun, I switched back to the "classic" Archive layout today, and MAN OH MAN, the "classic" style ROCKED! ...And the "new and remodeled" style really SUCKS!
I was deluding myself into thinking the site remodel job was fine...was I ever wrong! By comparison, the old site was very easy to browse, navigate, and locate items, while the new site takes much longer to navigate, plus the category or subject "blocks" are randomly haphazardly displayed and extremely uneven in shape and size. It looks like a baby took a box of blocks and tossed them onto the floor.
The site's a mess and needs to keep the choice of old or new layout, instead of stupidly retiring the "classic" site.
To the inept redesign of the Internet Archive, a loud raspberry and nose-thumbing is deserved and given.

Agreed.
However, what the users want and what those who donate to the Archive want don't matter.
All that matters is what the "lead programmer" wants.
It seems to me that when you donate to the Archive, the money is used to pay the salaries of saboteurs who call themselves "programmers" and who think that the new site is "kewl".
All of the "programmers" responsible for this "progress" should be fired and blacklisted.
They should be forced to return the wages that they received. After all, they were being paid to help the Archive, not to harm it.

However right you may be, I don't think this is the best approach. The staff will only be less inclined to help if they see posts like these, and I do see you doing some useful Copyright research on the Archive.
As for the lead programmer, while she be responsible for specific key features, or as some may call "bugs", I doubt that all of the unwanted changes can be pinned to a specific person. Before any big changes occur anywhere, there is usually a big meeting where the person whose really in charge gives the group the thumbs-up; or conversely, the person whose really in charge cancels the meeting (so sure of themselves that they are correct), and tells the group to implement the change immediately.
Coding a change onto a website, and pressing the Big Red Button of Doom are two different things. For all we know, these "unwanted" changes come from higher up, and no one really knows the full chain of command or whose really in charge of all these decisions on IA. If there was transparency on whose making the actual decisions, then I would direct your concerns to that person; however, such transparency does not exist.
The bottom-line, though, is that the staff is not going to change the interface… period. At this point, only the users can change it, and hopefully, we will have it restored. Please don't write such comments, though: Be factual and helpful in your postings, but don't be rude. Take a moment to cool off, and read what you've written. Often, I have to edit my post more that 20 times before I'm satisfied with what I've written, and after reading it and seeing that my point was made in a clear and concise fashion: I leave it alone, unless to update crucial information for future users to use as reference. If I don't get the response that I am looking for (which does occur more than I would like it to), then I simply move on to the next problem, occasionally updating the thread of interest perhaps once or twice a month.
This is a charity, and they are not obligated to help any of us, they do it out of their own principles (which are often ignored in some cases). Although it would be nice if they were more forthcoming with us when issues or bugs are reported, your current post I can guarantee will affect how willing they are to do so.

You need to review the comments of over one year ago. Beside the discovered deletion of unfavorable data about the Beta interface there was one shocking statement by an admin.
He stated they have stopped needing contributions. Although some request are here and there is a button, the admin stated their funding is coming from another source now. I cant find the posting and became upset by the poor people who were pointing out how bad it will be one day. Today.
And if you really want to look around, tell me where some very active admins of two years ago are now. Certainly not on the forums.

I dread the day they pull the plug.
Maybe we will be able to access the classic site in the wayback machine.
Oh Great Pumpkin, where are you?!!

The day that the "classic" version is "retired" will be the last day I use IA.
But we're just pissing in the wind. The people running IA never look at the forums and really don't care what we think. They've already convinced themselves that their correct and everyone else is wrong.

So as much as I have grown to hate the new layout, I've added the "Classic TV" section to my bookmarks, since that's why I come here, especially for Matt's uploads.
Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates it, and a generic Happy Holidays to all! And remember in your celebrations: Drink Gloog, make Slemoth!* :-D
(*Lost in Space in-joke!)
