For future reference, seems they kinda don't. Or at least, the process is full of bugs!
I just went through deleting and re-creating an account to change my user-id so that it matches my screen name. It worked, *but I've changed my screen name to something else prior to deleting that account*.
The full process went like this:
-2) I had created the account, naming it mPiotrek
-1) I had changed the screen name to mskiptr
0) I wanted the user-id to also be mskiptr
1) I tried changing the screen name to mPiotrek – it failed, claiming it's already taken [BUG]
2) I changed the screen name to mpiotrek_ – it worked
2.1) I changed the screen name to mskiptr – it worked
2.2) I changed the screen name to mpiotrek_ – it worked
3) I deleted that account
4) I created a new account named mskiptr (also using a different email address)
5) When I try to create an account named mPiotrek I get an error that this screen name is already in use
6) When I try to create an account named mpiotrek_ I get an error that a screen name cannot start or end with a period, dash, or underscore [BUG – or (2) was]
So, It would be nice if someone could further test this with a screen name that doesn't end with _. Still, if you just want to have your user-id match your new screen name, you can follow my trail and make it work.
Also, sorry Jeff Kaplan for replying to your comment, but unfortunately the parent post seemingly doesn't exist anymore.
