Annotations were notes that could be added to videos and were used to provide extensive commentary, create interactive series, correct mistakes, and more.

Annotations were removed from YouTube on January 15th, 2019, 15:00 UTC.

This collection is currently used by AnnotationsRestored, AnnotationsReloaded, and Invidious to provide annotation data for old videos. It contains annotation data from roughly 1.4 billion videos.

It was created using data collected from this project, as well as contributions from smaller archiving efforts.


Each item contains collected annotations from videos starting with that letter. Each item contains 64 tar files correspond to the second character of the video ID, AA.tar,AB.tar, etc.

Each tar file contains three letter directories with the corresponding XML files.

Great Thanks for all the work you all put into preserving history.
It seems like YouTube is aging into a slow and painful death.
And annotations were actually visible on mobile browsers when in desktop mode (using YouTube's Desktop HTML⁵-powered video player.).

I thought I was the only one to care about annotations, and I was unhappy thinking they would be gone forever, but thanks to efforts of the community of people who appreciated YouTube when it used to have a youthful spirit, a good portion has been rescued.

Thanks to the programmers that made tools dedicated to preserving this historical piece of the internet.
