Stop the legal killing of dogs and cats in Sweden

In Sweden its common practise in the countryside and rural environment to "euthanize" your own pets instead of letting a vet do it because it costs too much. This is all fully legal for anyone who has a hunting license and gun ownership, and it doesn't matter if the animals are in pain, dying or even a danger to others, it can be for any reason the owner wants. No chance or re-homing if the owner isn't interested. They don't need to report it or ask for permission as it's seen as their property. It is also common in the countryside to shoot unwanted kittens that can't be sold. This is NOT done by normal pet owners in Sweden, but only a few people like hunters in the countryside who sees it as a cheap solution instead of letting a vet do it for payment.

If it's a puppy or kitten younger than 14 days, it is also legal and recommended by the Swedish Board of Agriculture to euthanize them by bashing them in the head with a club or other heavy object instead of shooting them.

Guidelines and recommendations by the governmental Swedish Board of Agriculture for private euthanization of dogs and cats:

"Dogs and cats

"The most common method of killing dogs and cats is to allow a vet to kill the animal by an overdose of anesthetic. It is also legal to shoot the animal on your own under certain circumstances (gun ownership and hunting license). Puppies and kittens younger than 14 days should be killed by hitting them in head."

Slow sled dogs and unsuccessful hunting dogs are particulary at risk and can get legally killed by their owners through gunshot, even if they are fully healthy. In most civilized and EU countries, this wouldnt be allowed, or seen as acceptable!

This petition is a follow up to the one by Heather Bryson in Sweden who's young and healthy Alaskan husky sled dogs was sold to new owners, and found out 2 weeks later that the huskies had been shot dead by the new owners and there was nothing she could do since The Swedish Board of Agriculture allows gun owners with hunting license to euthanize their own pets through gunshot:

Outrageous and disgusting. Animal abuse is a felony in the U.S. and all of these people would be put in PRISON.

How sad, that you need to be asked to STOP illegal killing of dogs and cats. i'd really anticipate that the duties of the Board of Agriculture would KEEP and UPHOLD existing laws ... and take appropriate action to deter any agency, person, company, or entity that defiled laws enacted to PROTECT and maintain and uphold those laws. What possible harm could dogs and cats purport to cause? That, dear gentleperson, is the reason for the specification of the law itself. But the law cited in the petition is absolutely insane, inhumane and absolutely cruel! Find another solution, please! i'm embarrassed for you -- i always thought of Sweden as a "safe place" - a country to emulate. But any government authoritarian who approves bashing animals, or shooting unwanted animals is just plain WRONG. Please - in the spirit of all that is humane - teach your citizens that LIFE is to be cherished, and that includes the lives of animals. Animals are NOT property - iike a toy or car, etc: they are breathing, living creatures fully capable of gifting people with unconditional love. Wouldn't even an orphanage LOVE to have a few pets ~ please nourish your conscience and spirit to find compassion and mercy and invest in protecting animals. It doesn't cost much to fund a shelter for animals. You'd be amazed at the number of homes and people eager to have the love of a dog or cat in their family. You'll certainly find healthier people as a result - there is data proving that animals lower blood pressure and absolutely bring out the best in people. Your current laws are really bringing up a new generation of people who ignore and blaspheme the name of companionship and love that only comes in the language of woofs and meows. Please take a second and third look at the issue... with fresh eyes, an open heart, and an esprit de corp amongst your collegues to re-evaluate this senseless and blind acceptance of bashing animals and shooting the dear dogs and cats.

Sweden, I thought you were a civilised country but obviously not. Unwanted pets should be given a second chance with a new family but if all else fails the least they should get is a peaceful painless death by a qualified vet. Change your cruel laws.

This is shocking to me! I lived in Sweden for awhile, not a rural area but a larger city, and I can't believe this is legal and "recommended by the Swedish Board of Agriculture". This makes me sad, and I have severe reservations about recomending travel to a place that could allow this sort of treatment of animals.
