That was way better than I expected, considering where last chapter left off. Glad it could end just as it began, with panels of the actual Billy Bat comic (and the conclusion to The Pharaoh's Curse no less, which might just be the most hyped up storyline in-manga).

So yeah, the bat ushers his last command to Kevin before banishing: "Keep drawing". This action kept the soldiers from killing eachother, and thus preventing the end of the world scenario where the kid stands alone in the middle of all the corpses. The last comic also carries the prophecy for the kid, who will now take up on the artists' mission, but this time without having to rely on the bats.

Overall, this is a story that I would love to revisit. It was amazingly ambitious and had top notch execution. I'm also seriously looking forward to what Urasawa has got in store next.

Do u get the part with the man in the moon cuz that confused me a ton

[–]XelsiusRexhttp://myanimelist.net/mangalist/Xelsius 29

Alright, I reread that part just now because I wasn't sure I got it either and this is what I could understand:

Basically, Kurusu made it to the moon because he heard that the drawing of the bat there would grant any wish. He hated the world because of the things that had happened in his childhood, and his biggest dream was to hold the fate of the earth in his hands. The bat told him that all of the other parallel earths had already been destroyed, and that if he made his wish (To live his childhood as he would've wanted, becoming a succesful mangaka and all that) then the world would end.

Meanwhile, another of the bats (Remember that there's at least 3 of them) was urging Kevin Goodman to rewrite Kurusu's story, up to the point where he arrives on the moon. This bat wants Kevin to come up with an ending where Kurusu doesn't make his wish and the earth is able to continue existing. Kevin actually manages to pull it off at the last second and it seems that Kurusu's conversation with the bat and his own memories of his father help him get over his wish, so he ends up not making it. Thus, the earth is saved, and Kurusu dies on the moon while watching over the blue globe.

In later chapters, another bat asks Kevin to draw what would've happened if Kurusu actually made his wish. HE would live a happy childhood, become one of Japan's greatest mangakas, and it is then implied that the end of the world would come and he would be there to witness it.

I read chapters 117 and 122-123 if you're interested in checking them yourself.

I thought it was cool how it's implied that in the parallel Earth, Kurusu was essentially Osamu Tezuka, similar to Chuck Caulkin was Walt Disney in their timeline

Woohoo, it's finished. Now I can binge this series.

Agreed. I really hope it's just as amazing as the author's previous works.

It is! I'd put it somewhere between 20th Century Boys and Monster, with Monster being my favorite.

I loved both 20th Century Boys and Monster. Monster seems to be liked more by people, but 20CB was just really unique in terms of the whole story.

20CB was just really unique in terms of the whole story.

I agree, but the plot was tighter in Monster, and it had stronger character development.

Billy Bat has story structure that's more akin to 20th Century Boys, so you should really enjoy it!

Thanks! The storytelling/pacing in Monster was just fantastic, but there's a charm to 20th Century Boys I just can't forget.

So, discussion thread in a week? Anybody interested?

Definitely interested. Will probably binge the whole thing this week.

Yeah let's wait a week so we can binge it

i enjoyed the earlier half of the series more than the latter. Great one nevertheless.

I agree. Honestly I wish I binged this one like I did with 20th Century Boys but overall it's a good read. Can't wait for his next work!

Great final. As you can expect from Urasawa-sensei.How many greats works has this guy already? There are too many, Master Keaton, Monster, 20th Century Boys, Yawara, Happy, Pluto, and now this. An he teases a new work at the final page :D

This left me with mixed feelings. But yeah overall I liked it.

Yep, especially the part that spoiler is typically cliche of a hero luck, but somehow he still managed to make me feels fresh, genuine experience like first time viewer.

bro those mines were old, believe the dream

Well, you can bet a certain comic or a bat-deity had something to do with that "luck". It was meant to be - that's one of themes of the series.

I loved that final chapter amazing series.

Take your time, read it slowly.

Truer words were never spoken.

Wow, what a ride. This ending was bittersweet, in a lot of ways. Really made me think of our own future, and not in an altogether unpleasant light. We need more works like this: gritty and realistic, but there is still hope.

Thanks you, Mr Urasawa, for another great work. I can't wait to read your next comic.

Honestly this is one of the best endings urasawa had to a manga yet. He tackled important issues like always and knocked them out of the park. I do find it hilarious though that I called the ending last chapter. Humanity may use religion as a ray of hope but never use it is a complete guiding path for you never know what it may lead you to do. Humanity should live on its own two feet and draw their future from hope .

What an absolute masterpiece. This work was truly art of the highest order. Amazing essay on human nature, history, art, and the inheritance of will and consciousness.

I can't believes its over! What a ride!

[–]Necroqubushttps://myanimelist.net/mangalist/Necroqubus 3

Can anyone with few sentences describe and recommend this for me? Synopsis is very confusing and sounds too ambitious.

Japanese-American Kevin Yamagata is the author of a popular American comic book series known as Billy Bat. One day, someone tells him that they swear they've seen the same Billy Bat character somewhere in Japan but Kevin swears he made him up. Motivated by his own conscious and the possibility that he may have stolen the character, Kevin goes back to Japan to find the "original" Billy Bat. However, it seems to be more than just a character as Kevin finds himself going deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole as he tries to uncover the meaning behind the bat.

That just about sums up the first 3-4 chapters, the manga is really well done; I'm a little disappointed in the ending but all in all its worth reading.

I think it's worth mentioning to newcomers that Billy Bat in the manga is pretty much a smart allegory to Spoiler.

It's not just that, though. IMO it also represents Spoiler.

Yeah I agree with this. It's not a simple allegory to religion - that's just one aspect of it. It's an allegory of inherited will and consciousness, human civilization and the effect of art on it. Those two are what I'd call the main themes of this work.

Wow, seems so obvious but I never made the connection. It all makes sense now.

Yeah a lot of people didn't notice at first (including me) once you realize that turns from a weird manga to a really decent one.

[–]Necroqubushttps://myanimelist.net/mangalist/Necroqubus 2

Holy shit, after 5 months I asked this and saw this chapter, I started reading it and binged in a weekend. I am mind blow, every each of characters had backstory, complicated personalities. Even villains like Timmy and Kurusu made me feel for them. Amazing!

Could you go on? This still doesn't tell me what it's exactly about. Seem rather vague.

It's historical fiction/conspiracy/soft-scifi/vaguely lovecraftian.

Honestly, its really hard to get into without getting into major spoilers. Basically it takes a significant portion of history, and many prominent events of the last century and sets them in a context of a vast metaphysical conspiracy.

it has manga Lee Harvey Oswald

that should be enough to get you hooked

What an incredible and wild Ride. I can't wait for Urasawa's next work.

[–]Witn 1

Was the ending satisfying? Gonna read it now

Urusawa's endings are always interesting, and never what you necessarily wanted, but I always love them. I'd actually put this as one of his best.

I also don't get it.

[–]Iliansichttp://myanimelist.net/profile/Sicilian 1

Well, the ending was uninspiring, to say the least. It kinda just there. Still it was an awesome ride, and it's clearly a superb manga-series, which brought Urasawa's talent for multilayered plot at the new level.

Can't wait for his new series. In the meantime, off to finish reading Urasawa's "Happy!".

Was the ending rushed as in it was cancelled or for you the readers it was well done and made in the exact spot it should be done

Every time a series is ending doesnt mean it was canceled and needs to be rushed. We've been looking at this particular end game for quite a while now. The last few chapters were a surprise though.

If you've been following the series you should have had a decent idea of how it would have gone

My take on the story is that all Kevin Y. and Kevin G. Went through, their entire journey was to help this kid at the end.

i don't quite get what happened but that seems to make sense

I did not read a single page out of it, just want a opinion before reading it

I think it means to left there.

Back at the time it's about Kevin Goodman, he draws himself as a Bat. past chap ref

This child is a pup, he's no Bat, and not under Billy's influence anymore.

Where I can DL a batch of the entire series? Was Billy Bat always translated by the team or...?

Wow, just ended suddenly. not even had a clue that the series will be finished in this chapter. quite disappointed, especially when compare to the author previous works.

Never have I been so excited while simultaneously still having no idea what's at stake.
