Changes to pricing

What changes are being made to pricing?

We are introducing a Unity Runtime Fee that applies to certain Unity subscription plans based on per-game installs across any Unity-supported game platform. Creators only pay once per download. For details, see the Unity Runtime Fee FAQ.

Who does the Unity Runtime Fee apply to?

Unity Personal and Unity Plus: The Unity Runtime Fee will apply to games made with Unity Personal and Unity Plus that have made $200,000 USD or more in the last 12 months AND have at least 200,000 lifetime installs.

Unity Pro and Unity Enterprise: The Unity Runtime Fee will apply to games made with Unity Pro and Unity Enterprise that have made $1,000,000 USD or more in the last 12 months AND have at least 1,000,000 installs.

For creators with games over these revenue and install thresholds, the following fees apply on a per-game basis:

Runtime Fee
When does the Unity Runtime Fee take effect?

The Unity Runtime Fee takes effect, if applicable based on revenue and install thresholds, on January 1, 2024.

  • For Unity Personal users the Unity Runtime Fee will take effect, if applicable, on January 1, 2024.
  • For existing customers renewing their paid Unity subscription plan between now and Dec 31, 2023, the policy will apply upon renewal and the fee will take effect, if applicable, on January 1, 2024.
  • For existing customers renewing their paid plan in 2024 and beyond, the fee will take effect on January 1, 2024 or, in some cases, on the first of the month after the subscription end date.

Changes to Unity plans

What changes are being made to Unity plans?

Coming in November 2023, we will update some of the Unity subscription plans to add extra value. New capabilities include better collaboration (Unity DevOps), cloud-based asset management (Unity Asset Manager), role and access controls (Team Administration), and the ability to add AI functionality at runtime (Unity Sentis). These new tools and services will come with no increase in plan pricing.

  • Unity DevOps and the new Unity Asset Manager enable more efficient collaboration and content management. These cloud-based services will be integrated with the Unity Editor to improve transparency and workflows for studios of all sizes.
  • Team Administration features that provide greater control over how teams work together, protecting access to projects and assets, and enabling admins to set permissions for what each seat can do with Unity products and services.
  • Unity Sentis lets developers embed a running AI model in the Unity Runtime inside their game or application. This enables models to be run on user devices without additional cloud-compute costs or network latency.

Separately, we are introducing a Unity Runtime Fee that applies to certain Unity subscription plans based on per-game installs across any Unity-supported game platform. Creators only pay once per download.

For details on the changes to each Unity plan, please refer to its respective FAQ section:

For details on the Unity Runtime Fee, please see the Unity Runtime Fee FAQ.

Unity Runtime Fee

What is the Unity Runtime Fee?

We are introducing a Unity Runtime Fee that applies to certain Unity subscription plans based on per-game installs across any Unity-supported game platform. Creators only pay once per download.

Who does the Unity Runtime Fee apply to?

Unity Personal and Unity Plus: The Unity Runtime Fee will apply to games that have made $200,000 USD or more in the last 12 months AND have at least 200,000 per-game lifetime installs.

For creators with games over these revenue and install thresholds, the following fees apply:

Runtime Fee

See our Unity Runtime Fee page for more information.

Do I still need to pay for my Unity subscription plan?

Yes. The Unity subscription plan is separate from the Unity Runtime Fee.

How are non-gaming applications impacted by the Unity Runtime Fee?

The Unity Runtime fee does not apply to our film, gambling, or education subscription plans at this time. Industry customers who have questions about the Unity Runtime Fee or deploying and monetizing the Unity Runtime should reach out to their account manager or contact sales.

When does the Unity Runtime Fee take effect?

The Unity Runtime Fee takes effect, if applicable based on revenue and install thresholds, on January 1, 2024.

  • For Unity Personal users the Unity Runtime Fee will take effect on January 1, 2024.
  • For existing customers renewing their paid Unity subscription plan between now and Dec 31, 2023, the policy will apply upon renewal and the fee will take effect on January 1, 2024.

Which countries do the standard fees apply to, and which countries do the emerging market fees apply to?

Standard fees apply to app installs in the United States, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. Emerging market fees apply to app installs in all other countries.

Runtime Fee
What is the Unity Runtime Fee revenue for?

Each time a game is downloaded, Unity’s runtime code is also installed. The Unity Runtime Fee goes towards the continued investment in that code to support the billions of devices served every month.

How will I be invoiced?

You will be invoiced monthly based on the month’s install data. Invoicing will be the same method as your Unity plan subscriptions, though it will be monthly regardless of your Unity plan payment cycle.

How is the Unity Runtime Fee calculated?

If a game or app meets the minimum thresholds for eligibility, the Unity Runtime Fee will be calculated based on the applicable rate (depending on the number of installs, the country of installs, and the user’s Unity plan) multiplied by the number of eligible installs.

The runtime fee schedule provides tiered rates based on your Unity plan (Unity Personal, Pro, or Enterprise). For a game with a high number of installs spanning more than one tier, the first set of installs will be charged at the first per-install rate, and incremental installs above the first set, charged at the second tier rate, and so on.

For example, let’s look at a hypothetical game made by a team using Unity Pro with the following revenue and install numbers:
Revenue from last 12 months - $2M USD
Lifetime installs - 5M

The Unity Runtime Fee will apply to this game, as it surpasses the $1M revenue and 1M lifetime install thresholds for Unity Pro. Let’s look at the game’s installs from the last month:
Prior month installs (Standard fee countries) - 200K
Prior month installs (Emerging market fee countries) - 100K

The fee for install activity is $23.5K USD, calculated as follows:
(100K x $0.15 (first tier for standard fee countries)) + (100K x  $0.075 (second tier for standard fee countries)) + (100K x $0.01 (fee for emerging market countries)) = $23.5K USD

Note that this example shows just the fee for the month in question. Fees will likely vary month to month based on the previous month’s installs, including the potential for months with no charge.

Can I get a discount on the Unity Runtime Fee?

Qualifying customers may be eligible for credits on the Unity Runtime Fee based on the adoption of Unity services beyond the Editor, such as Unity Gaming Services or Unity LevelPlay mediation for mobile ad-supported games. This program enables deeper partnership with Unity to succeed across the entire game lifecycle. Please reach out to your account manager to learn more. For details on Unity LevelPlay, please contact your account manager for ad monetization, or contact sales here about ad monetization.

What is Unity LevelPlay?

How is an install defined?

An install is defined as the installation and initialization of a project on an end user’s device.

How is Unity collecting the number of installs?

We leverage our own proprietary data model and will provide estimates of the number of times the runtime is distributed for a given project – this estimate will cover an invoice for all platforms.

Does a reinstall of an app on the same device count towards the Unity Runtime Fee?

No, we are not going to charge a fee for reinstalls.

Do installs of the same game by the same user across multiple devices count as different installs?

We treat different devices as different installs. We don’t want to track identity across different devices.

Do fraudulent installs or “install bombing” count toward the Unity Runtime Fee?

We are not going to charge a fee for fraudulent installs or “install bombing.” We will work directly with you on cases where fraud or botnets are suspected of malicious intent.

Once my game passes both revenue and install count thresholds, will I be charged retroactively for all installs up to that point?

No. The install fee is only charged on incremental installs that happen after the thresholds have been met. While previous installs will be used to calculate threshold eligibility, you will not have to pay for installs generated prior to January 1, 2024.

Will installs of a demo, or a game in open access or beta, count toward the Unity Runtime Fee?

If a user can access a full game (e.g. via an in-game upgrade or purchase), then installs count toward the fee. If a user can't access the full game (e.g. only one level is offered) then that demo would be considered a separate package and not count toward the fee. Early access games are not considered demos. In addition, we don’t intend to capture or count installs for QA testing.

Is collecting the install data GDPR and CCPA compliant?

The method we are using to calculate installs is currently derived from aggregated data from various sources collected in compliance with all privacy laws and used to build a confidence around our estimate.  If anything changes, we will provide you with notice and compliance mechanisms to assure all parties remain in compliance with applicable laws.  Please note we will always work with our customers to ensure accurate billing.

Will games made with Unity phone-home to track installs?

We will refine how we collect install data over time with a goal of accurately understanding the number of times the Unity runtime is distributed. Any install data will be collected in accordance with our Privacy Policy and applicable privacy laws.

Does the Unity Runtime Fee apply to pirated copies of games?

We are happy to work with any developer who has been the victim of piracy so that they are not unfairly hurt by unwanted installs.

Will this fee apply to games using Unity Runtime that are already on the market on January 1, 2024?

Yes, the fee applies to eligible games currently in market that continue to distribute the runtime. We look at a game's lifetime installs to determine eligibility for the runtime fee. Then we bill the runtime fee based on all new installs that occur after January 1, 2024. For more details on when the fee may apply to your game, see When does the Unity Runtime Fee take effect?

Who is charged the Unity Runtime Fee?

The Unity Runtime Fee will be charged to the entity that distributes the runtime.

Will developers be charged the Unity Runtime Fee for subscription-based games?

No, in this case the developer is not distributing it so we’re not going to invoice the developer on subscription-based games (e.g. Apple Arcade, Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, Netflix Games, etc.)

Does the Unity Runtime Fee apply to web and streaming games?

We are not going to count web and streaming games toward your install count.

Does the Unity Runtime Fee apply to charity offers or bundles?

No, any installs driven by charities or charity bundles will not count towards the Unity Runtime Fee.

Unity DevOps, Unity Asset Manager, Team Administration

What new Unity DevOps features are coming to Unity Industry?

Starting in November, we will be including free seats of Unity DevOps with every Unity Industry plan. A modular DevOps solution from Unity Gaming Services, Unity DevOps is tailored for the rigors of game development. It is purpose-built to provide robust version control and CI/CD solutions in the cloud, so you can release more often, catch bugs earlier, try more ideas, and deliver higher-quality games to market.

Seats of Unity DevOps give users access to both the Unity Version Control module and the Unity Build Automation module. Unity Industry organizations will receive a DevOps seat for every plan purchased. Additionally, subscribers will receive 5GB of storage and 200 Windows build minutes per month. Additional seats, storage, and build minutes will be available for purchase.

What if I already have Unity DevOps?

If you already have Unity DevOps, these free seat allocations can be applied incrementally to your existing count. As an example, any organization that purchases 50 seats of Unity Industry will receive 50 seats of Unity DevOps.

What is Unity Asset Manager?

Currently in beta, and launching GA in November, Unity Asset Manager provides robust 3D asset management, user administration, content transformation, and security capabilities to increase the discoverability, reuse, and ROI of both created and licensed content across your organization.

Unity Industry users will receive 120GB of storage, the ability to add custom metadata, a CAD web-viewer, and view-only and consumer roles in addition to asset approvals, asset versioning, and integrations with Unity Version Control, as part of Unity DevOps. Additional storage will be available to purchase in early 2024. Eager to get started? Request to be a part of the Unity Asset Manager closed beta program here.

What is Unity Team Administration?

Coming in November, we’re modernizing the way organizations can manage access to their assets, subscriptions, and cloud development tools. Admins will be able to access these via a consolidated view embedded directly in the Unity Dashboard, providing role-based access controls and views into product usage, user permissions, and solution access. With these improvements, admins for Unity tools will have both the visibility and capability necessary to keep the development chain secure and agile.

It is purpose-built to provide robust version control and CI/CD solutions in the cloud, so you can release more often, catch bugs earlier, try more ideas, and deliver higher-quality games to market.

Unity DevOps consists of two core components: Unity Version Control and Unity Build Automation.

  • Unity Version Control helps programmers, artists, and designers overcome game development challenges by enabling efficient creation with a version control system (VCS). It is powered by Plastic SCM technology.
  • Unity Build Automation helps automate your build pipeline in the cloud and keep development moving, so you can make quality games by testing early and often, and releasing frequently.

Unity LevelPlay

What is ad mediation? How does it differ from an ad network?

Ad networks, such as ironSource Ads and Unity Ads, connect advertisers and app developers. Advertisers provide their ads to the network to promote their products, then app developers use the network to display these ads to their users in order to monetize their applications. Advertisers bid on the ad space made available by the developer in hopes of winning the impression and the developer receives payment for the use of the ad space.

Ad mediation is a monetization solution that enables publishers to work with multiple ad networks, managed through a single SDK, to maximize ad revenue.

Unity LevelPlay, Unity’s own ad mediation platform, gives multiple ad networks access to an app’s advertising inventory, creating an arena in which the networks must compete for their ad to be served. Higher competition among ad networks means competitive eCPMs and more ad revenue for app developers.

What is Unity LevelPlay?

Unity LevelPlay is an industry-leading, end-to-end ad mediation platform for game and app developers. It supports everything your business needs to scale. With Unity LevelPlay, you can:

  • Generate revenue with monetization tools and ad sources through Unity LevelPlay mediation’s competitive real-time auction and optimization tools.
  • Gain transparency and data availability with granular breakdowns to pinpoint opportunities immediately.
  • Acquire users at scale using exclusive user acquisition solutions and automated targets.
What are the benefits of using the Unity Editor and Unity LevelPlay together?

The combination of the Unity Editor and Unity LevelPlay is transformational in that it gives mobile game developers the tools they need at each stage of their development journey: from building, publishing, and operating mobile games to monetizing them and growing their player base across multiple channels.

The largest publishers in the ecosystem are moving to Unity LevelPlay because they understand the value that the combined power of Unity and LevelPlay represent. With two of the industry’s largest networks (ironSource Ads and Unity Ads) performing optimally as bidders in Unity LevelPlay, and optimizers enriched with ad revenue data, performance on Unity LevelPlay delivers significant impact on growth and monetization.

How does Unity LevelPlay stack up against its competitors? How is it unique?

Unity LevelPlay is a leading mediation platform used by the world’s top mobile-gaming publishers. Our key differentiators are:

  • Real-time pivot: In-depth and granular monetization data insights available to publishers, including data from waterfall latency metrics, CPM buckets, and visibility into programmatic activity in the ironSource Exchange
  • Ad Quality: Churn and revenue data available by creative, advertiser, and developer, and only available through Ad Quality, along with UX patterns, and the level of detail of the data that publishers get on the ads in their apps
  • Marketability testing: Only solution on the market that predicts your app’s success on SDK networks
  • A/B testing: Most robust A/B test insights in a dedicated report, including app-level ARPU and retention over time. Tests are easier to set up than on competing products
  • ROAS optimizer: More visibility into and control over ROAS campaigns to achieve greater scale, while increasing ROI
  • Cross promotion bidder: LevelPlay’s cross promotion competes like your own private network, bidding for impressions in your mediation stack to optimize for both retention and monetization
  • Mobile app: LevelPlay is the only mediation platform with a mobile app
