a section needs to be added on Advertisement...Dailymotion has recently revamped add policy. Many videos will now require a user to watch a 30 second ad before they may view the video. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.229.36.85 (talk) 10:09, 14 October 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

An idiot writes...[edit]

"How can al those south park episodes be on there and not be removed? I'm pretty sure thats a copyright violation, I hope they get sued till their B R O K E"

-The South Park creators don't really care.

-It's the publishers and distributors that care.

...maybe the Idiot is a publisher, or distributor ? (but what does that make me publishing and distributing my words...)

My changes[edit]

Since my revision was reverted, I thought I would explain my changes. First paragraph; header removed as per style guide. First instance of name in bold as per style guide. users can sign up and upload, watch, rate, review and share videos. - It's a video sharing site then. The 'features' section was just a little sloppy so I edited that without losing any information, and it wasn't large enough to warrant a subsection.

External links formatted as per style guide. 'Similar websites' moved to See also, as per style guide. Marasmusine 23:27, 6 November 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

copyrighted stuff taken down[edit]

anywhere else that hosts this stuff now? cause what are the online-viewers gonna watch now? any similar sites other than motion we could mention? Ace Face

Gone[edit]

looks like they disappeared, checking 0300GMT 01/09/07. Possibly related to hosting the entire new Bond movie (Casino Royale).

Explicit Content[edit]

Someone wrote

With regard to explicit sexual content, Dailymotion inexplicably shows up at the top of the following google searches: "share your sex videos," [9] and "share your masturbation videos." [10] However Dailymotion's own terms of service state that such content on their site is prohibited[11]. Screen captures taken June 9, 2007 verify this claim:

I removed that section because Daily Motion previously allowed sexually explicit materials provided the user was registered and claimed to be over 18 but recently changed it.

Isn't that for pornography rather than showing boobs etc

Fair use rationale for Image:Untitled12.jpg[edit]

Image:Untitled12.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Changed policy[edit]

When and why did they bring in a 'no porn' policy? —Preceding unsigned comment added by StudentSteve (talkcontribs) 10:30, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Added images verifying their deceptive placement on google[edit]

Dailymotion shows up up the top of the following google searches: share your sex videos and share your masturbation videos. Yes their terms of service prohibit such content. I've updated the main article to reflect this, but I'm mentioning it here since my past edits have been removed. I've put them back on yet again. But here are links to the images in case another deletion takes place:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Dailymotion_sample_search_re_sex_-_June_9_2007.JPG http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Dailymotion_sample_search_re_masturbation_-_June_9_2007.JPG

Sincerely, cbean

p.s. On the issue of 'no porn,' as far as I can tell they've always banned it, in spite of their apparently deceptive placement at google - as per what I've documented as per my screen captures.

Just a quick note, Porn is alive and well on dailymotion, the sexy channel is full of it. Note: if you can't get the sexy channel just when you click on channels it means you are being blocked, for whatever reason. But dailymotion probably has the best range of porn/sexy/nude videos around, better than the dedicated youporn's because they have more users and videos. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.96.65.142 (talk) 02:29, 6 November 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Motion Maker Link?[edit]

Videos uploaded by users to Dailymotion can be uploaded at 320x240, 640x480 or 1280x720 resolution. Example of vid with 1280x720 resolution - [1] However, only MotionMaker users can upload at a resolution of 640x480 or 1280x720. - StrongmanRS (talk) 14:26, 12 February 2008 (UTC)StrongmanRSReply[reply]

URL redirecting[edit]

The URLs in the table redirect depending on location of ISP used. I added a cleanup tag and a bold notice so that users are not surprised when it happens.

For what it's worth here is my limited Original research to show what redirects from where. I could not find any comment on this behaviour from a quick google. I noticed that www.dailymotion.pl (not mentioned in the article) does not suffer redirects, at least not from Italian, United Kingdom and United States ISPs.

Please note that these URL addresses may redirect to other domains depending on your location. (see cleanup tag at top of Dailymotion article for more details)

File:Dailymotion logo.png Nominated for speedy Deletion[edit]

An image used in this article, File:Dailymotion logo.png, has been nominated for speedy deletion at Wikimedia Commons for the following reason: Copyright violations
What should I do?

Don't panic; deletions can take a little longer at Commons than they do on Wikipedia. This gives you an opportunity to contest the deletion (although please review Commons guidelines before doing so). The best way to contest this form of deletion is by posting on the image talk page.

  • If the image is non-free then you may need to upload it to Wikipedia (Commons does not allow fair use)
  • If the image isn't freely licensed and there is no fair use rationale then it cannot be uploaded or used.
  • If the image has already been deleted you may want to try Commons Undeletion Request

To take part in any discussion, or to review a more detailed deletion rationale please visit the relevant image page (File:Dailymotion logo.png)

Changes for a better article[edit]

Hi there, I have made some updates to the current articles, in order to make it more useful to anyone who wants information about dailymotion. The changes keep getting deleted and I just want to know why... Can you help me ? Thank you.

"Blocked" sale to the Chinese[edit]

In April 2015, there was talk of a potential sale to PCCW but the French government insisted "that the telecoms operator explore “all options” before siding with a non-European buyer". This could be mentioned in the 'History' section.

Has repeatedly undone critical edits to the Dailymotion article. Could be working for Dailymotion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.176.78.107 (talk) 07:55, 9 September 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

No I don't work for Dailymotion, and this is a classic failure to assume good faith. The reason why this edit was reverted is that it uses a blog source. Also, separate criticism/controversy sections are not good Wikipedia writing style. The sourcing on the fine is not ideal, and according to this source Dailymotion was fined €1.3 million after a court ruling by the Paris Court of Appeal confirmed copyright infringement.[2]. This needs a rewrite to be included in the article.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 08:11, 9 September 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I added an additional copyright case from 2007. Your editions to this, Ianmam, are being monitored. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.12.73.226 (talk) 18:39, 12 September 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Please quit the paranoia. I have got nothing to do with Dailymotion and am simply trying to ensure that edits are properly cited.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 18:47, 12 September 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

2016 hack[edit]

What happened to DailyMotion comments? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.147.44.84 (talk) 04:08, 1 December 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

There is a Reddit thread about this here and it looks like the comments feature for videos was dropped a few months ago. One Redditor says "No more comment sections on Dailymotion. But that’s fine because no comment section is better than your average YouTube comment section IMHO." Fair point, if most of the comments are rubbish/spam/trolling it is better not to have them at all.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me)
Noticed it too. I guess it is mention-worthy. ––Handroid7 (talk) 15:28, 4 September 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

720p limit for mobile users[edit]

It appears that around the time of the rebranding, May 10th or 11th, mobile viewers were restricted to watching at up to 720p. Options for video resolutions above 720p are no longer available to mobile viewers. Previously, 1080p and 1440p and even 2160p were available to them. Perhaps Dailymotion thought anything beyond 720p makes little difference on screens of that size.

I first thought this is a temporary issue, but it has remained that way after several days. This limitation has not yet been documented in credible sources, but as soon as it is, I will add it to the article. Elominius (talk) 20:34, 15 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

On an additional note, the 144p and 240p transcoding options that served remote locations with a very low bandwidth were removed in late 2022, for both desktop and mobile users. I remember that 144p video was served at what looked like only 10 to 15 frames per second and with low sampling rate audio. As of writing, the lowest available option is "380p" (sic.). Technically, it is 384p, so it appears they want consistency with the other options, all of which have numbers that are multiples of ten.

My closest guess for the reason behind the removal is that too few users from low-bandwidth countries visited Dailymotion. It looks like this has not been reported in a credible source. If someone finds it, feel free to add it. Elominius (talk) 22:25, 14 July 2023 (UTC) - last modified 15:56, 8 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Vertical video downscaling[edit]

It appears that Dailymotion scales vertical videos down so their height matches that of horizontal videos, instead of swapping the width and the height like YouTube does. Dailymotion's "2160p" for vertical videos is not actually 2160×3840 but it is downscaled to 1216×2160, which is not much above the pixel count of 1080p. Vertical "1440p" is not 1440×2560 as one would expect, but 808×1440 (example: FR22238935UHD). Not that one should film vertically anyway, since it ruins the watching experience on anything besides smartphones. This could be the reason no one has noticed it so far: people (including myself) don't like to watch vertical videos to begin with.
