We’d heard rumours of new smaller capacity, more affordable options from Harley-Davidson, and now it’s finally happening, with their partnership with China’s Qianjiang bearing fruit, in the form of two new parallel-twin Harleys, the X350 and the X500.

The X350 here in Australia will retail for $8.5K ride-away for reference, and the X500 bumps that up to $11.5K, with both expected in December if you want to get your name down.

It’s pretty clear these offerings aren’t designed for the North American market either, where American-made Harleys are the norm, instead suiting regions were smaller capacity motorcycles are more the norm, where there’s beginner rider restrictions, or alternatively where a more affordable and modern motorcycle may be a winner.

So let’s look at the X500 first, the bigger brother of the new Harley-Davidson X range.

So, a 500 cc liquid-cooled, parallel-twin, 69 x 66.8 mm bore and stroke, 11.5:1 compression ratio and 46 Nm of torque plus 47 hp or 35 kW of power, peaking at 8500 rpm. That torque is about 15% higher than the old Street 500 and peaks at 6000 rpm, which is much higher in the rev range, however these new bikes will no doubt rev harder and longer than the ole Street.

An 820 mm seat height is also on the taller side, with a wet weight of 208 kg, which isn’t the lightest, but also shaves some weight off the old Street 500 too, and I’d say the new X500 will be a bit more agile and nimble in the handling department just looking at it, and the spec sheet. There’s over 20 degrees more lean angle on each side available compared to the Street!

Wheels are 17 inch units front and rear in cast aluminium and we’re seeing Maxxis Supermaxx ST tyres run, in a fairly common 120/70 front, and a narrower 160/60 rear. I mean this isn’t a Sportster S!

Suspension and brakes are a standout, as we’re seeing dual disc rotors on the front with four-piston calipers, while many bikes in the class make do with a single caliper, until they reach that 650 c..

A close friend was in a serious car crash with his brand new Dodge Charger Daytona 392. The car was totaled, but it kept him safe. It is a testament to how well made these cars are. They don’t just go fast really well, but are safe.

I go into a more in depth analysis of the collision and point out where the Dodge shined, despite such a heavy collision against a large pickup truck. The car was rear ended, and shoved into another car in front, resulting in severe damage to the trunk and engine compartment area.
Despite all this, the cabin frame did not buckle, to where the doors were opened easily, allowing quick escape. The damage also reveals some peculiarities of Hemi’s (Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, Chrysler 300 and 300C) of how these cars behave, in part to the large tires that seem to act as bumpers, preventing ingress into the cabin space.

This was a very sad story, though it does have a happy outcome, as my friend was able to find another new Daytona 392. In this crazy market, getting one without markup is awesome. But he, as well as all of us here won’t forget that the poor little car gave itself to save her occupants. RIP Daytona.

Things arent as good for the second car in the video. It’s a 50th Anniversary car, a 2020 Dodge Challenger Hemi. It’s a 5.7 V8, that my friend has been modifying for some time now. It has esthetic as well as performance modifications, as the car has been on a diet, shedding weight to the point it was holding its own against 392 Scat Packs.

From the simpler to do oil catch can, to the insanely awesome rear seat delete with OEM parts, he made this car his, and was keeping me up whenever he added (or removed) something. So it broke my heart to learn the reason for his silence in the past few days.

The car was stolen. Its horrible when your car is stolen but even the hope of recovering it and taking on scuffs, broken windows and the smell of ashtray was dashed when I saw what was done. It was totaled as well.

So, please, do what you can when it comes to anti-theft measures. It’s a sad world when you can barely have a nice car without idiots doing things to your car or flat out taking it. Police are of little use, and completely pointless in most US cities.

But, please, reach out if you are bummed. Either in a comment, email, anything. And I know that even if Im late I will answer. We are all that we have, as brothers.

As far as the UAW strike. I feel that FCA (Dodge) workers may be in for a hard time, as Dodge likely will shut down the Brampton Ontario plant without replacing the assembly line, to get rid of contracts or workers, or simply to offshore. History may repeat itself as Ford did in 2011 with the end of the Crown Victoria (Grand Marquis and Towncar) when the St Thomas plant in Ontario was shut down, and torn down.

Unions don’t care, nor do they help the harders working employees, since its all about seniority, not passion or dedication. And that is one thing I have seen with the Brampton workers. You guys have the passion and drive. So, thank you for building our cars, and being part of the Brotherhood of Muscle!

Quick update on my jeep along with a little project.

Ferrari are notorious pricks. Grossly overpriced. You must receive an invitation to buy their new models. You sign a contract that Ferrari is allowed to take the car back and fine you if you modify it in any way, including repainting it. Ferrari lies about everything, including the number of each model produced to make them seem more limited. They have tons of quirks and are notoriously unreliable, famous for catching on fire. You get hit with fees everywhere and have to slip money to the dealer to get ahead of the wait line. No repairs can be done by anyone but Ferrari and they are steep. For instance, an oil change can run you $10k.

Lamborghini was created because Mr. Lamborghini got sick of dealing with Ferrari, the numerous problems with them breaking down, and the snooty attitude they gave him when he mentioned things that would improve their cars or make them more reliable, so he made his own car and named each model after his prized bulls.

McLaren is a far superior vehicle if you can afford one. They are reliable and priced appropriately, don't have strange quirks, aren't resistant to change and very practical for a super car. Check out this documentary on how the McLaren F1 was created and why.

BREAKING: In the latest terror attack linked to the Islamic State, at least 29 people were killed when a suicide bomber attacked a football stadium south of Baghdad Friday, Iraqi security officials told The Associated Press. Nearly 60 other people were reported hurt. Fox News has learned ISIS immediately claimed responsibility for the blast. The terror group also said it was behind the bombings in Belgium Tuesday, which killed 31 people and wounded 270 others. Security officials tell the AP Friday’s bombing took place during a match in the small stadium in the city of Iskanderiyah, 30 miles from Baghdad. Medical officials confirmed the death toll. Even as the Pentagon announced U.S. Special Operations forces have killed ISIS’ second-in-command, ISIS continues on its roll.
It was just three days ago that the radical Islamic group murdered at least 30 and injured 300 in multiple attacks in Brussels. And just last night, French authorities arrested someone involved in an “advanced stage” terror plot. It appears all but certain that more attacks are in the works — the question is where and when.
