Mayor Adams likes to take on the role of innovator, from the head-scratching, like taking his first paychecks in cryptocurrencies, to the genuinely useful, like his push for a unified portal for city services. That’s also stretched to his other favorite topic, public safety, around which he’s spoken admiringly about facial recognition technologies and other potent tools. During his trip to Israel — a country surrounded by military enemies — he hinted at taking tips, including police use of drones.

Rikers deaths tell us a lot about the Department of Correction

The simple metric of “deaths at Rikers” is a useful one for the reason that it illustrates the most acute consequences of the city’s failure to improve conditions and guarantee safety on the hellish island. Delays in intake, failure to provide mental health services, crumbling physical infrastructure, poor staff utilization and absenteeism — all these are very real breakdowns that harm detainees, but can to some level be remedied. Facilities can at least in theory be rebuilt, leadership rejiggered, delays addressed, but people cannot be brought back from the dead. It is the most final, irreversible failure.

Prioritize skills to fill city jobs: NYC should follow the private sector and drop the need for a college degree for some posts

Tens of thousands of skilled New Yorkers have been shut out of good jobs that could lift themselves and their families out of poverty, simply because they don’t meet often unnecessary degree requirements for the positions they seek. This contributes to the deep inequalities that are still too prevalent in New York City’s economy. There’s now a giant opportunity to change this: by expanding skills-based hiring, the practice in which employers eliminate degree requirements for some jobs and instead hire based on an assessment of skills.

Lessons for Gov. Hochul after two years on the job

On other consequential tests, her record has been decidedly mixed — but she seems to be learning as she leads.
