Most of the Republican presidential primary field met tonight in Wisconsin to “debate.” So who won, and who lost? The frame I ran this by was: Are they in better shape in the presidential campaign after tonight? And the only way they’re in better shape is if they created an opening to chip away at Donald Trump in the months ahead.

Minnesota names first Black chief justice of state Supreme Court, Natalie Hudson

Gov. Tim Walz on Wednesday promoted Natalie Hudson to be chief justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court, making her the first Black person to lead it. Hudson was appointed associate justice in 2015 by then-Gov. Mark Dayton, after serving as a judge on the Minnesota Court of Appeals for 13 years. Sincere advice for GOP debate candidates (No, really)

It's that time again: The first Republican primary debate will soon get underway. For Democrats, the stakes tonight are low. All eight candidates are eager liars who either are fascists or are willing to play fascist. Any Republican with a spine thicker than a sewing needle has already bolted the party. These candidates are the dregs. For the candidates themselves, though, the stakes are quite high. Each needs to make it through the night with a minimum of gaffes. Each needs to appear plausibly presidential (good luck). They will all be sucking up for the much-needed Fox News vote, which means they need to make a play for Rupert Murdoch’s heart.

Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas has long been a fool. His lack of shame and willingness to say and do just about anything in search of power and personal aggrandizement are legendary. His clown capacity reached new heights Monday, hours after Tropical Storm Hilary passed through Los Angeles, when Cruz retweeted (re-Xweeted?) an image that millions of people have seen over the past 12 years. It showed a shark swimming on a flooded highway.

Mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, who led a brief armed rebellion against the Russian military earlier this year, was aboard a plane that crashed north of Moscow on Wednesday, killing all 10 people on board, according to Russia’s civil aviation agency.
