Why is it every time I try to view an old webpage using this site, it either times out or it's extremely slow and almost never shows images?

When Wayback Machine first started, it was never like this.

Now I can almost never use it to see how a website looked a few years back.

There are several reasons why the archive.org is slow. One reason is because archive.org offers free services and when things are free, many people usually access the service. When many people use a website, the broadband becomes limited and the website slows down. If you are trying to access the website's information on a Friday evening, expect archive.org to be slower. However, if you access information during the night or during the morning when no-one else is using the website, you would expect the website to be faster. Another reason that causes archive.org to be slower is due to the fact that archive.org is government funded. Recently, the United States government experienced an economic depression, and this caused all of the projects/programs/organizations to be partially cut in budget. When organizations are cut in budget, they try to find ways to save money to accompany the budget cut. The budget cut is another reason why archive.org is slower. If more people would donate money to archive.org, then the website should be faster.

Despite all of the problems of the speed, consider this: Archive.org is an organization that offers free services. Be happy and glad that you can freely access thousands of Terabytes of information for without having to pay money. I do not work for the archive.org, but I am just a user of the website. I am happy with all the services that archive.org provides and I suggest that you also be happy with all of the services. Thanks and have a nice day.

That's the thing, I CAN'T access the data, so there's nothing really to be happy about. Off and on over the past few years, I've had maybe a 10% success rate of actually getting information from the Wayback Machine.

Logging on in the morning is relative. Who's morning? East coast USA? West Coast? I live overseas anyway.

I'd gladly donate to the site if it meant I could get a reasonable speed. In fact I clicked the Donate button hoping there might be some speed priviledges for those who Donate. I was wrong. If the site has limited funding, perhaps they should look into how to maximize what they've got rather than spreading themselves too thin.
Make certain areas only available to those who have donated. Or save higher speeds for those who have donated. Or if certain areas are taking up way too much bandwidth, perhaps have them available only at certain times.

Even if they only ask for a small donation for certain areas, it may help separate the serious researcher from the casual download-the-hell-out-of-everything person.

I don't know, I only visit this site maybe 4-5 times a year in my efforts to research something on the Wayback Machine (my efforts are usually in vain), so I don't know everything else the IA is involved in.

Perhaps more people would donate if there was some benefit and it didn't look like their money was going into a black hole.

Hello,

I discovered archive.org many years ago, but it is still very slow. I recently uploaded a video to my Farsi-speaking audience. But it almost doesn't work. I remember when I donated to this website a couple of months ago, the amount of donations had reached 12M$. So why there is still such a poor bandwidth? Is there a schedule to fix that?

hi. the issue is not bandwidth. the video you uploaded was not processed with a web friendly codec. in the future if you unpload mp4 use .mpeg4 as the filename extension. then the system will create a more web-friendly .mp4.

i did that and it's processing now. it should work better when it is finished.

Hi Jeff. I have tried to upload another video. I converted it to QuickTime MOV so that your system can automatically generate an MPEG4 version (since it's impossible to export a good MPEG4 video from Adobe Premiere). So is the next step waiting for the system to create an MPEG file? Because right now the MOV file I uploaded is not being shown as a video.

Thank you.

It will automatically try to create other formats after you upload. It can take some time to derive the other formats.

There is currently a message displayed on your item that states in a blue bar:
this item is currently being modified/updated with a derive task

Hope that helps.
