For the purposes of this discussion, I limit my answers to the generally accepted biological definition of “man” and “woman”. While there are numerous exceptions and grey areas, men and women can be separated and identified by biological markers such as Y chromosome, testosterone levels, reproductive genitalia, secondary sex characteristics (body hair vs. breasts), etc. For those who have an uncertain mix of those characteristics, definitions and labels and biological/psychological identity becomes… tricky, and my heart goes out to them. I wish there were easy answers! So when reading the following, please understand that I am painfully aware of those who don’t neatly fit into one category or the other and I wish I had better answers. As it is, what follows is limited to undergraduate coll…

No. Not even close. Men are bigger, stronger, more muscular with bigger lung capacities and longer arms. Preteen girls are only faster because at that age they are taller than the boys.

I would say girls have an advantage in swimming.

For short distance swimming, boys are significantly faster due to their muscle power and lung capacity.

Despite that, girls are more capable in long distance swimming. Their body shape gives them a big advantage at performing their stroke. They also have extra body fat that prevents their body from sinking, creating more drag.

Although both guys and girls have an advantage in different areas, any skilled person would be faster without much practice, regardless of gender.

It depends. Speed: Girls are usually faster at younger ages, but boys start to catch up in certain areas as they start to reach their teen years and adulthood. When it comes to shorter distances like 100m and 200m, boys are faster because they have lots of muscle power and strength. However, if it’s longer distances like 1500m, girls often beat boys because girls rely more on aerobic power and cardiovascular abilities, making them last longer than boys but there are some exceptions. Kick and Floating: Girls are often better when it comes to kick sets and floating because they have more body fat, which creates extra buoyancy. In general, I would have to say that girls are usually better in most areas of swimming except short distances where boys are usually better. However, everything needs a lot…

No.

Get some real-time statistics historically and you will get the results. Also, watch videos of Mixed Relay medleys, you will see the reality.

No way, guys have longer, stronger arms, shoulders, stronger legs. There is simply no way around it.

There is logic that yes women can swim faster then men. But not always some men are skilled and if you don’t have much experience they can swim faster. But there is also no theroy that they can be better as some have more experience.

No. They are better dentists painters but males are stronger and faster

At young ages? Yes. In teens and adulthood? No. Time trial requirements from club swimming make this pretty obvious: https://www.usaswimming.org/docs/default-source/timesdocuments/time-standards/2020motivationaltimes-top16singleyear.pdf?sfvrsn=13 Before age 11, girls are faster. At age 11, they are about the same speed, with girls being slower on a few strokes significantly (as in more than 2% slower). After age 11, girls and boys improve, but the standards for boys increase by a ton. By age 14, boys are significantly faster. By the Olympic level, men are swimming 4 seconds faster than women on 100m events. World record progression 100 metres freestyle - Wikipedia On distance events, the gap is even greater. The men’s record on the 1500m free is 14:31.02. The women’s record is 15:20.48. This is a…

No. At the Olympic level, women are behind by about 10%.

We Thought Female Athletes Were Catching Up to Men, but They're Not

This is an interesting question. It really comes down to the distance. Over short distances, men's power, lung capacity, and larger pulling surfaces (hands/forearms), are a winning combination. Just like in running over short distances, women are not competitive with men. However, over long distances, women make up ground. Their body shape is conducive to having a very efficient stroke and great form. One of their biggest advantages is the tendency for fat to accumulate at the hips/butt/thighs. This prevents their legs from sinking into the water, creating more drag. This problem occurs often for men with leaner lower bodies. Anyone who's swam with a pull buoy (a foam brick that you hold between your legs so you can't kick) knows that its buoyancy makes a pretty big difference in the efficien…
