Why this petition matters

Started by hantai sabetu

Approve Family Visits for Inmates and Their Families in the United States
Please sign this petition - the innocent family members should not be punished along with the incarcerated family member. Today, only four states—California, Connecticut, Washington and New York—allow family visits.  (These visits used to be called conjugal visits.)  Inmates who qualify for family visits are temporarily furnished with private, apartment-style quarters within the prison walls. This type of visit is a scheduled period in which an inmate is permitted to spend several hours or days in private with their legal spouse, and/or other family members.  Permitting these type of visits, not only preserve family bonds, they also increase the success rate for a prisoner when they return to life outside prison.  Family visits serve as an incentive to motivate inmates to not only comply with the various day-to-day rules and regulations of the prison, but also to avoid any action which might disqualify them from having their family visit. As stated earlier innocent family members, especially children, should not be punished along with their incarcerated family member.  Please sign so family visits can be implemented by prisons in all 50 states. Please support this petition by signing and sharing with friends and family. Thank you!     Read more

We All Want to Feel Safe: No More Blue Angels Over Seattle
Every year, Seattle hosts "Seafair" and as part of the festivities, the Blue Angels perform over the city (the largest city in the Northwest).   While we recognize that many find viewing the Blue Angels performances exciting and enjoyable, there are many people who do not feel safe or okay when these incredibly loud practices and performances take place over our greater Seattle area for close to a week.  Our perspectives include: --those who have survived events and threats of war, including veterans with PTSD, immigrants and refugees;  --residents who live with higher amounts of pollution in our cities--near the highways, flight paths, the airport and the port; --people impacted by the cost and concerned about the waste of gas, especially at a time of high prices;   --people suffering from local climate impacts, including heat waves, flooding, and more frequent fires; --caretakers of young ones and petowners, who cannot understand the scary noises and need to hide.   We also recognize there is incredible skill and talent in being a pilot of any kind of aircraft, and we honor those who serve to keep us safe. We understand that many want to celebrate those pilots’ talent and service.  There has to be a better way where we can do that and not force so many to endure fighter jet flyovers.  We ask our local leaders (city, county, state) to act so there are no more Blue Angels over Seattle.  We never agreed to this.  And while we don't agree with the performances, if others insist they want them to continue we also encourage those leaders and the stakeholders of Seafair and others who like the Blue Angels find and work with a community that agrees to host the show - far away from a major metropolis and a legislative district with some of the worst air pollution in the state.  Please stop it here and encourage a path so we can all feel safer and have fun times with loved ones.  Read more

Bring Back Free Block To AACPS
The Anne Arundel County Board of Education has decided to change the county wide schedule for high schools, removing what was known at schools around the county by many names (Panther Hour, Bruin Block, Nest, Bulldog Block, etc.), this time was used by students to visit teachers for extra help, attend clubs, relax, spend time with friends, and eat their lunch. The Board of Education has enacted a new schedule that removes this free block in favor of 30 minutes 3 times a week where students can attend clubs. Please sign this petition so that we can bring Panther Hour, Bruin Block, Nest, Bulldog Block, and so much more back to schools across Anne Arundel County. Thank YouRead more

Stop Health Canada’s plan to regulate Natural Health Products as Self Care Products
You have the ability to stop Health Canada's proposed change to natural health product regulations as "self care products" under the same set of regulations as chemical non-prescription drugs.  What does this mean for Canadian public? Drug manufacturers have been pressuring Health Canada to regulate natural health products as drugs. Health Canada is about to implement those changes. The projected new regulations will include over the counter medication and natural health products under a “self-care” umbrella. Concretely, the changes will mean reduced access to natural products as well as increased costs associated with natural health products because of the following: Traditional claims will no longer be allowed to support safety and efficacy of dietary supplements meaning the supplements will no longer be available. Currently the majority of herbal ingredients approved by Health Canada fall within this category and include: Aloe vera, Arnica, Ashwagandha, Black cohosh, Chamomille, Chaste tree, Devil’s Claw, Dong quai, Eleuthero, Garlic, Ginseng, Hawthorn, Lemon balm, Licorice, Milk thistle, Peppermint, Saw palmetto, Senna, St. John’s Wort, Valerian, as well as many others. Increased cost of supplements for end users. Health Canada will significantly increase the costs associated with the production and licensing of natural health products. These costs will be transferred to customers, as has happened in Australia with similar regulations. This will also mean that smaller companies will disappear from the marketplace reducing competition and increasing costs further. This will ultimately reduce access to natural health products especially for more vulnerable and lower income families and individuals.  Read more

    Justice for Jelani Day
On August 24th Jelani Day went missing and his car was found with no license plates or keys several days after he was reported missing. Ten days later, Jelani’s body was found face down in the Illinois River 60 miles from his campus in a town where less than 1 percent of the population is Black. Jelani was an avid swimmer who’d competed on his school’s swim team who had no known connections in this town. Jelani's car, wallet, clothing,  phone AND body were found in five DIFFERENT locations. The police departments in Bloomington, Peru, and La Salle aren't producing any answers to what happened to Jelani Day. The police states that Jelani's death is "suspicious" and "unusual." but have not thoroughly investigated the entire case. Jelani's murderers are still free, walking the streets among us and we’re losing confidence in local authorities as they never made Jelani ‘s disappearance a priority. Jelani loved the Lord. He ran track at Alabama A&M, was enrolled at Illinois State to get his master’s degree in speech pathology and is a member of the fraternity Omega Psi Phi. Sign this petition to bring justice for Jelani. Demand that the FBI intervenes to find what happened to Jelani Day.Read more

    Container Ban for Bodie Toohey
A container is something that restricts an infants movement or traditional movement patterns. Examples are: swings, walkers, jumpers, bumbo seats, etc. Children at all childcare facilities and their families are at risk from their childcare centers having access to various containers to occupy infants for minutes. Access to these containers for prolonged periods of time can pose a risk for the child's health. Aside from potential death, other implications of container use include: developmental delays, plagiocephaly, torticollis and decreased overall muscle strength. There are many alternative toys and activities that these childcare providers can use other than containers that put children at risk. There are several alternatives that can be used by facilities during the day that do not restrict the movement of the child or can encourage safe head positioning. Bodie Toohey was 2 months old when his life tragically ended when found unresponsive after sleeping in a swing at his daycare. Families are trusting these childcare facilities with their babies. Use of these containers in these environments where children are going to be safe can easily be avoided by not being allowed. If things stay the same, there are more children's lives and qualities of lives at stake. Not to mention, the families mental health who are also impacted by the facilities that utilize these containers. Loss of more lives are inevitable. We do not allow smoking in childcare facilities due to the potential health implications, why are we allowing something just as potentially deadly? Now is the time to act. It's time to act for the babies of the future. With the increased population growth over Covid-19 and the demand for childcare, this presents a potential for these tools to be utilized more frequently and impacting more lives than the population norm. Immediate action is needed for the safety and mental health of our young families and their children. Want to do more than sign? Donate to the GoFundMe Page HereRead more

"Fajr's Law" - 6 yr old special needs child dies from neglect of school bus driver & aid.
On July 17, 2023 my daughter Fajr Atiya Williams rode a public school bus healthy and alive and somehow ended up brain dead less than an hour later. Fajr had Emanuel Syndrome which is a rare chromosome disorder that left her non-verbal and wheelchair bound. She was asphyxiated by the harness of her wheelchair while the bus aid was sitting at the front of the bus on her cell phone with (2) ear buds in her ears.  Special Education children are suppose to be taken care of the entire bus ride to and from school. We expect our children not be ignored as if they mean nothing. The driver nor the bus aid noticed my Fajr pleading for help! No one noticed until it was too late! I am coming here as an outcry for change in the way all children are transported within all school districts not just for special needs. We need to rally together and fight for our rights. One of them being the safety of transportation. If things stay the same this could happen to another child leaving us all devastated once again.  We can't wait for change. Change needs to happen NOW! I am proposing "Fajr's Law", that will entail The Board of Education firing Montauk Transit LLC immediately, all bus drivers and aides to be trained in CPR as well as trained to handle any adaptive equipment a child may have. Training to recognize all signs of distress and to have an emergency plan in place for emergencies.  Help ME, Help all of you that have children who take school transportation as well as children with special needs.Read more

TEEN WRONGFULLY CONVICTED & SENTENCED TO 92YRS AS FIRST TIME OFFENDER! HELP BRING HIM HOME
19yr boy sentenced to DEATH BY INCARCERATION as a first time offender for a crime where no life was lost . No women or children were harmed and most importantly there is no evidence he was ever there!  A crime where no life was lost, with no documented evidence placing him at the crime scene, sentenced to 92yrs with no chance of parole. Winston Walters was just a teenager he'd  never been in trouble before when a home invasion robbery took place in Oklahoma, over a year after this crime happened, after the victims identified their nephew as being one of the perps with 99.9% positivity after the case went cold, a career criminal would get in trouble after robbing a church and having a stolen handgun from this robbery on him and tell police he obtained the stolen gun by robbing Walters shared home. Winston was on his way to becoming a star! he had starred in a reality tv show "mudcats", worked on American Idol season 12, and made a movie that was never released due to these allegations. Once his name was brought into this case it made headlines "Reality tv star arrested" "Former Mudcats star awaits sentencing", etc all of which can be found on google, but what you won't find on google are the FACTS and CORRUPTION of this case, this poor kid was railroaded by the system *Victims identified their nephew with 99.9% certainty based on his height, voice, and mannerisms not to mention the perp knew his way around and even about the couple's phones giving them the idea that the perp knew them personally and they had just repoed the nephew's truck and he had been kicked out of their sons home (his jimmy kit and pill bottle was found at the crime scene) One of the lead investigators on this case had just been fired from another county for illegal activity Evidence at trial was INSUFFICANT TO SUSTAIN THE STATES BURDEN OF PROOF The Trial Judge had a bias from the start, a few years before this case his father in law was murderd in a similar manner (home invasion) not knowing this fact until AFTER the trial, Walters was deprived of his right to a fair and impartial Trial, TRIAL JUDGE IN VIOLATION OF DUE PROCESS improper handling of evidence, said evidence was still allowed in courts although no one knew where they came from and when asked at trial the statements were contradicting to one another. while investigators agreed to mishandeling the evidence and improperly documenting evidence All of the states "witnesses" that they used to place Winston at the crime were not only older, they had criminal records, all were looking at time and 99% of them got NO TIME thanks to their testimony. EVEN THOUGH ONE WAS LITERALLY PICKED UP FROM A COLORADO JAIL AND BROUGHT BACK TO OKLAHOMA. All of these people stood by Walters innocence until lengthy interigations were done and the opportunity to save themselves from doing time was thrown in their faces. one of these ppl went to court an was looking at 100yrs while maintaining Walters innocence, after being on suicide watch and on record for saying he "would rather die then get a whole bunch of time" his story changed and brought Walters into it. None of the states witnesses told the same stories, they were all seen lying and contradicting one another IN BIG WAYS (the truth doesn't  change much in a story no matter who is telling it.) IN VIOLATION with the 6 and 14 AMENDMENT Walters received constitutionally ineffective assistance of councel. Walters was never able to TESTIFY ON HIS BEHALF. A teenager listening to what his lawyer told him to do. To this day its been one of his biggest regrets  Walters would receive multiple punishments for a single course of conduct The courts decision to run sentences CONSECUTIVELY was an abuse of descretion and constitutes an EXCESSIVE SENTENCE.  Lack of jurisdiction, Walters is a member of the Comache Nation, the district court lacked subject matter jurisdiction over this case.and much more not listed. PLEASE help save his life! This case need to be reexamined from an unbias lens we are DEMANDING he be freed immediately or be retried by his tribe! His realease date is 2107! This is a disgusting abuse of power from Oklahoma court system. Oklahoma leads the nation in mass incarceration and excessive sentences in cases that dont call for it. WE CANT STAND BY AND LET HIM BE ANOTHER STATISTIC TO A CORRUPT SYSTEM! We all know that not all judges or cops, investigators, or witnesses are bad, bias or corrupt, Unfortunatly for Walters he was dealt a bad hand. This is not the story of a 19 TEEN year old career criminal who was so terrible he needs to be locked away forever, this is tragic proof that the judicial system still needs ALOT OF WORK, to stop our Native Americans, African Americans, Mexican Americans and other minorities from being a victim of it. Helping one is a step to helping us all. Even incarcerated he's spent the past 10yrs trying to better himself, going to college and making handmade leather crafts, so that one day when he is free he will be a positive impact on society. " Freedom and justice cannot be parceled out in pieces to suit political convenience. I dont believe you can stand for freedom for one group of people and deny it to others." Coretta Scott King.   We are asking that wisnton be freed IMMEDIATELY,  10yrs of his life has already been taken by the prison system. He deserves a chance to live before more decades are lost. Time is the most precious thing humans have, I dont know how people sleep at night knowing they took his life from him before he ever got a chance to actually live.  PLEASE BRING WINSTON HOME   Read more

    Change H-1B Lottery Process
Hello, We are a group of students / workers in the US who have fairly submitted 1 application in the FY2024 H-1B lottery. Since the first lottery was conducted there have been news of many multiple applications submitted by the same beneficiaries. We thought USCIS would conduct the second lottery without including such multiple applications but they were in the lottery pool again which essentially lowered the selection rate for fair applicants again. This is injustice to us and as USCIS mentions on their website, multiple applications can be seen as an offense. We are signing this petition to urge USCIS to conduct the third lottery by barring these beneficiaries who have done multiple applications and give the ones abiding by the rules a fair chance. (yes we are confident that there will be a third lottery in November as again many multiple applicants would not file their H-1Bs in the second lottery). To mention again, please bar and revoke the applications of beneficiaries who have submitted multiple applications before conducting the third lottery. Sincerely, Helpless and frustrated H-1B applicantsRead more

Save our property rights. Reduce Brevard County’s term for vacation dwellings to 30 days.
Homeowners that purchased properties as investments are being stripped of their rights to generate an income on their homes. A group of individuals are on a mission to harass every person that’s rents out their property within a 2 mile radius of Diane Circle, Indiatlantic Florida. They are not being personally affected by these rentals.  Our rights as property owners are being taken from us.  We are not generating bookings for wild parties.  Most renters staying in this area are families or snowbirds looking for a quiet getaway.  They are also generating revenue for local businesses.  We need the county to implement change in their rental restrictions now. We can help benefit local business owners and government by bringing tourism and paying local taxes.  Revenue could be used to improve county managed beaches, roads, sites, etc. We want to help make Brevard County great while still keeping the integrity of local communities. We want peaceful people to visit and contribute to the community. Read more

Stop Spain farming Octopus for food
A plan to build the world's first octopus farm has raised deep concerns among scientists over the welfare of the famously intelligent creatures. The farm in Spain's Canary Islands would raise about a million octopuses annually for food, according to confidential documents seen by the BBC.They have never been intensively farmed and some scientists call the proposed icy water slaughtering method "cruel."The Spanish multinational behind the plans denies the octopuses will suffer. The confidential planning proposal documents from the company, Nueva Pescanova, were given to the BBC by the campaign organisation Eurogroup for Animals.Nueva Pescanova sent the proposal to the Canary Islands' General Directorate of Fishing, which has not responded to a BBC request for comment. The world's first octopus farm - should it go ahead?Octopuses caught in the wild using pots, lines and traps are eaten all over the world, including in the Mediterranean and in Asia and Latin America. The race to discover the secret to breeding them in captivity has been going on for decades. It's difficult as the larvae only eat live food and need a carefully controlled environment, but Nueva Pescanova announced in 2019 that it had made a scientific breakthrough. The prospect of intensively farming octopus has already led to opposition: Lawmakers in the US state of Washington have proposed banning the practice before it even starts.Nueva Pescanova's plans reveal that the octopuses, which are solitary animals used to the dark, would be kept in tanks with other octopuses, at times under constant light. The creatures - the species octopus vulgaris - would be housed in around 1,000 communal tanks in a two-storey building in the port of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria. They would be killed by being put in containers of water kept at -3C, according to the documents.Currently there are no welfare rules in place, as octopuses have never been commercially farmed before. However studies have shown that this method of slaughtering fish using 'ice slurry' causes a slow, stressful death. The World Organisation for Animal Health says it "results in poor fish welfare" and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) - the leading farmed seafood certification scheme - is proposing a ban unless fish are stunned beforehand. Some supermarkets have already moved away from selling fish that have been killed using ice, including Tesco and Morrisons.Prof. Peter Tse, a neurologist at Dartmouth University, told the BBC that "to kill them with ice would be a slow death … it would be very cruel and should not be allowed."Adding that they were "as intelligent as cats" he suggested that a more humane way would be to kill them as many fishermen do, by clubbing them over the head.  IMAGE SOURCE,GERARDO G. MOURÍN - GGMOURIN@GMAIL.COMImage caption,The global octopus trade is now estimated to be worth more than £2.2bnTo supply "premium international markets" including the US, South Korea and Japan, Nueva Pescanova wants to produce 3,000 tonnes of octopus a year. This equates to around one million animals, with some 10-15 octopuses living in each cubic metre of tank, according to campaign group Compassion in World Farming (CiWF), which has studied the plans.Nueva Pescanova estimates in its documentation that there will be "a mortality rate of 10-15%".Creatures that feel 'pain and pleasure'Jonathan Birch, associate professor at the London School of Economics, led a review of more than 300 scientific studies which he says shows that octopuses feel pain and pleasure. It led to them being recognised as "sentient beings" in the UK's Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act 2022. Prof Birch and his co-authors believe that high-welfare octopus farming is "impossible" and that killing in ice slurry "would not be an acceptable method of killing in a lab"."Large numbers of octopuses should never be kept together in close proximity. Doing this leads to stress, conflict and high mortality … A figure of 10-15% mortality should not be acceptable for any kind of farming."In a statement to the BBC, Nueva Pescanova said: "The levels of welfare requirements for the production of octopus or any other animal in our farming farms guarantee the correct handling of the animals. The slaughter, likewise, involves proper handling that avoids any pain or suffering to the animal ..."In the wild, octopuses are fiercely territorial agile hunters. Nueva Pescanova is proposing that the farmed animals be fed with industrially produced dry feed, sourced from "discards and by-products" of already-caught fish. The tanks would be filled with seawater piped in from an adjacent bay. The tanks would be different sizes for the different phases of the octopuses' life, with the salinity and temperature closely controlled. The initial brood of 100 octopuses - 70 males and 30 females - would be taken from a research facility, the Pescanova Biomarine Centre, in Galicia, northern Spain. The plans state that the company has achieved a level of "domestication" in the species and that they do not "show important signs of cannibalism or competition for food".Elena Lara from CiWF called on the Canary Islands authorities to block construction of the farm, which she said would "inflict unnecessary suffering on these intelligent, sentient and fascinating creatures".Reineke Hameleers, CEO at Eurogroup for Animals added that the European Commission was currently reviewing its animal welfare legislation and had a "real opportunity" to "avoid terrible suffering".Read more

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) has been linked to Autism, Asthma & ADHD. Pull from store shelves!
We request that the FDA withdraw acetaminophen’s (aka Tylenol’s) over-the-counter status and make acetaminophen a prescription only medication.  As a prescription only medication, we request that acetaminophen should also include a Black Box Warning indicating that use of acetaminophen has been linked to Autism, ADHD, and Asthma.  Multiple peer-reviewed medical research studies, dating back more than 10 years, have linked acetaminophen use to autism spectrum disorder and to asthma, and medical research has linked acetaminophen use to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder since 2014.  Despite this, acetaminophen unfortunately remains widely available over-the-counter, in numerous different formulations, and apparently acetaminophen is still recommended by numerous misguided or irresponsible physicians for routine use during pregnancy and also for routine use by infants and children.  Patients and parents are often completely unaware of the risks and unaware of the links between acetaminophen use and autism spectrum disorder, asthma, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.  A prescription only status for acetaminophen, along with a Black Box Warning would serve to protect the public.  The FDA needs to withdraw acetaminophen's over-the-counter status immediately to protect infants and children from needless harm. Before acetaminophen replaced aspirin for use in the pediatric population, due to concerns of risk for Reye's syndrome  (concerns which now appear to have been unfounded) the autism rate in the United States was only 2 - 4 in 10,000.  Now the autism rate  is 1 in 44.  The rates of ADHD and asthma have also skyrocketed during the same time period.  Research indicates acetaminophen induces oxidative stress and depletes the body of glutathione, an important antioxidant, and this is thought to be part of the mechanism by which acetaminophen contributes to autism, asthma, and ADHD.  We implore the FDA to please act immediately!  Withdraw acetaminophen’s over-the-counter status and include a Black Box Warning regarding acetaminophen’s link to Autism, ADHD, and Asthma.  We ask that the FDA please act immediately to protect infants and children from needless harm!   References: Cendejas-Hernandez J, Sarafian JT, Lawton VG, Palkar A, Anderson LG, Larivière V, Parker W. Stop Wheaton Park District's Parking Lot on Wetlands
Wheaton Park District plans to build a 3.9 acre parking lot on the natural wetland environment located on the east side of Gary Avenue between Winfield Creek and Hawthorne Boulevard. The Wheaton Park District quietly bought this property over several years and made changes to remove it from a flood plain. These activities and the planned 250-space parking lot is part of the Wheaton Park District's Cosley Zoo "master plan," which includes removing the current 80-space parking lot that was constructed in 2009. The planned nearly 4-acre parking lot would be approximately the same area as the current nearly 4-acre footprint of Cosley Zoo itself. Destroying the natural wetland environment in order to construct a parking lot would eliminate an important natural flood control resource in an area prone to flooding. Throughout each year the wetlands surrounding Winfield Creek and Northside Park flood several times. Removing nearly 4 acres of a natural flood control resource would increase flooding in the adjacent 500-year flood plain, which includes Northside Park and residential areas. The destruction of nearly 4 acres of natural wetland environment in favor of a parking lot would also likely pollute Winfield Creek with stormwater runoff from the parking lot. Parking lots collect toxic substances such as oil, antifreeze, grease, and heavy metals. Strong rainstorms wash these substances into nearby areas, in this case, wetlands and Winfield Creek, polluting the habitats of the fish, birds, and other wildlife living there. Some wildlife will not just suffer polluted habitats, but will be entirely displaced. The northern Illinois wetlands are home to hundreds of species of insects, birds, and other wildlife. Some examples include: Dragonflies Cicadas Water Striders Butterflies Fireflies   Bullfrogs American toads Painted turtles Blanding's turtles (an endangered species in Illinois since 2009) Garter snakes   Red-wing blackbirds Herons Egrets Goldfinches Mallard Ducks   River otters Muskrats Mink Cottontail Rabbits Red Foxes Let’s not wait to recognize what we’ve got when it’s gone. E-sign below to help stop the Wheaton Park District from paving a natural wetland environment paradise to put up a parking lot.Read more

Authorization Of Sleeve tattoos in the Marine Corps
Marine Corps Tattoo Policy Modification:  Political image and the overuse of the word "professionalism" has nothing to do with warfighting efficiency, proficiency, and lethality    Feel Free to provide any legitimate arguments or points I have not covered in the paper!  Links: Stellar Marine Refused Eligibility To Re-Enlist Or Advance in His Field Due To Tattoo Regulations   Argumentative Paper       Arguing in Favor of the Authorization of More Permissive Tattoo RegulationsBy: Jasper T. Piala The current tattoo regulations are discriminating against Marines with a desire for “sleeve” tattoos, comes with a damaging stigma, has a negative impact on morale, retention, and it’s absence on equal opportunity. Alarming numbers of Marines are silenced in their opinion or desire to bear artform covering certain parts of their body, including elbow, knees, forearms, and calves. Commonly the desired tattoos are referred to as “sleeve” tattoos. Due to a high number of Marines raising their concerns, it is in the interest of and of great concern to Headquarters Marine Corps to:(1) inform the force as to why tattoos in these areas are not allowed or heavily restricted, and (2) consider loosening restrictions on tattoos altogether. Competent and decorated Marines in the past and present who have proven to be an asset for the Marine Corps have been denied reenlistment and advancement in their field due to increasingly restrictive tattoo regulations. This creates an increasingly damaging stigma, within which a Marine who has or desires tattoos outside of the standing regulations is seen as lacking discipline. There exists no correlation, positive or negative, between tattoos and effectiveness, efficiency, discipline, or lethality. With regards to equal opportunity, transgender Marines have the authorization if they do desire to change certain parts of their body- which comes at a cost to the Marine Corps. Whereas, anyone who desires tattoos, pays for them with their own money, at no cost to the Marine Corps, but is restricted as that is not authorized. Marines want to be different from the rest; we pride ourselves on being a standout, elite warfighting organization in the eyes of the American public and the world at large. As such, we have more restrictive tattoo policies than the other branches so as to retain an image of difference when viewed by those not apart of the Marine Corps. Of note, the Navy and the Army allow the very tattoos forming the subject of this paper and have found no correlation, positive or negative, between tattoos and effectiveness, efficiency, discipline or lethality, all while still upholding their respective service’s highest tradition and professionalism. The Marine Corps of late has been too busy shaping such a political image that we often miss what has earned us such an image. Our forefathers before us bled, sacrificed, and gave, all for this country. These were Marines at a time where society considered tattoos controversial, taboo, or unappealing- something that would not get you hired in the civilian sector. Society has changed; tattoos are now more acceptable in the workplace than ever and so are the Marines that have come along and taken on the torch. What has not changed is the individual Marine’s ethos: efficient, effective, prideful, innovative, and still ready to take down the nation's enemies whenever and wherever needed, regardless of how many tattoos they have and where they have tattoos on their body. The current tattoo regulations are too restrictive and are, without convincing or apparent logic, out of step with modern societal norms. Across the Marine Corps, there is a problem with retention, morale, and equal opportunity. Allow Marines a sense of outward expression and individual pride through the modifying of tattoo regulations. Incentivize reenlistment by allowing Marines to express themselves in a manner that is of no cost to the Marine Corps with policies that mimic the sister branches. This does not lower our standards, decrease our lethality, or align ourselves with the other services. We align or separate ourselves through the actions of each individual Marine; the way we conduct ourselves on a day to day basis is what separates Marines from the rest. Another subject of note is the discrimination of Marines who desire such tattoos. A world of equal opportunity in the Marine Corps cannot exist if transgenders have the ability to pick and choose what they desire on/off their bodies, while personnel who desire tattoos in certain areas of their bodies do not have this ability. Of note, it is also important to state that the Marine Corps in every war has loosened policy during times of war in order to increase number of volunteers. These  volunteers range from having sleeve tattoos to unlawful citizens given a second chance by a judge to join the Marine Corps. This makes it seems some policies set in place are truly non-essential and has no correlation to combat effectiveness, and when it comes down to it the professional Marine higher Marine Corps wants you to see in posters or commercials are just that. An advertisement in concern of public image. In reality Marines are some of the most dirty minded, foul mouthed, warrior driven individuals America has.  Modify the standing tattoo restrictions or modernize the explanation for why the current restrictions are in place. If Authorized; Modify Marine Corps Bulletin 1020 authorizing tattoos anywhere on the body except the hands and above the collar bone. -Restricted Areas: 2 inches from wrist to fingers (exception for 1 ring tattoo on 1 finger); from above the collar bone to the top of the head which include neck, face, lips, tongue, and scalp.-Extremist or obscene tattoos shall remain restricted. (Aforementioned above shall be restricted of tattoos/markings/brands)   The point of contact regarding this matter is Jasper T. Piala at jasper.piala@gmail.com.   J. T. PIALARead more

Change the name of Dight Avenue in Minneapolis
Dight avenue in the City of Minneapolis is named after Charles Fremont Dight, a professor at the University of Minnesota who dedicated his life to Eugenics and cleansing the human gene pool of human beings who were deemed "less than desirable."  Dight not only founded the Minnesota Eugenics society but actively pursued the same type of eugenics as Nazi scientists such as Josef Mengele. In 1933, Dight wrote a letter to Adolf Hitler praising the Third Reich's efforts to "stamp out mental inferiority." This sort of legacy should not be recognized or lauded anywhere.  Minnesotans with disabilities continue to face significant discrimination every day. Nationally, 54 percent of police involved shootings involve someone with a disability.  The Disability Justice network is committed to combatting ableism in all of it's intersectional formats and we are committed in building more inclusive communities and amplifying the voices of those living the disabled experience. We ask the Minneapolis community to join us in  this commitment. In doing so, we say exactly what  Governor Luther Youngdhal said in the fall of 1949 as he stood in the Courtyard of Anoka State Hospital and burned mechanical restraints we say to the them  that we understand them — that they need have no fears -- that those around them are their friends. Please join us in combatting discrimination and a history of state sanctioned violence and sign our petition to rename Dight Avenue.          Read more

Free Greg Mingo: Help bring an innocent man home
UPDATE 9/3/2021: My uncle's sentence was commuted by Gov. Cuomo on his last day in office! Greg comes home September 16th! Please consider contributing to help ease his return after 40 years in prison. My family and I are so grateful for all your support. ---- My uncle, Greg Mingo, has been in prison my whole life for crimes he didn’t commit.  In 1981, he was wrongfully accused and charged, along with two others, in a robbery and double murder that took place in Queens one year earlier. Despite initially being offered a plea deal, Greg maintained his innocence the entire time. He has now been in prison for 40 years. My life has been shaped by my uncle’s incarceration. Uncle Greg missed my birth, but when I was four, my parents moved to Westchester, NY so we could be closer to where he was imprisoned. I’ve felt his absence in every milestone of my life since then. He missed my graduations from high school and Harvard. He could not be there on my wedding day.  And for what? There was no physical evidence in the case against Greg, and his court-appointed defense lawyer failed to present an alibi witness who had agreed to testify on his behalf. Only a Black man in New York in the 1980s could have been convicted on such thin allegations and sent away for so long. The average time served in state prison for a murder conviction is 15 years. Greg’s sentence of 50 years to life is staggering; what some refer to as “death by incarceration.” Uncle Greg grew up in a system rife with injustice. Just five months after sentencing Greg, Queens Supreme Court Justice Thomas Agresta used the N-word in open court in reference to a Black defendant. His gross, public ethical violation was so egregious that Justice Agresta was censured a year later, and has since been used as an example in legal scholarship on judicial misconduct and community harm.  Greg is an inspiration to me and countless people who have crossed paths with him. In the past 40 years, he has taken every opportunity to improve himself and help others. He has served as a peer counselor, legal research instructor, and led numerous workshops on aggression replacement training and domestic violence prevention. He’s also completed college-level courses that transformed his world view and fueled his aspirations for the future. Every day I worry for my uncle. Uncle Greg isn’t eligible for parole for another 11 years. His innocence is known by his family, his supporters and his legal team. It will be proven in a court of law one day. But until that day comes, nothing is more important than this: Greg Mingo needs to come home. Inspired by my uncle’s story, CUNY law students are assisting Greg with filing a clemency application, calling on Governor Cuomo to show compassion for Greg and release him from prison.  How You Can Help Greg Mingo’s family and supporters have set up this petition to gather signatures to advocate for his clemency. Please add your name (and address if you live in New York) to call for his release. For more info on how to get involved, please email info@freegregmingo.com or go to freegregmingo.com. * Please note: Including your address with your name—especially authentic New York State addresses—is a HUGE help. Because hearing from his own state residents will carry even more weight for Gov. Cuomo, it will boost Greg’s chances of freedom. I sincerely thank you for taking the time to learn about someone who means so much to my family.Read more
