The UK Reproducibility Network (UKRN - www.ukrn.org) is a national collaboration whose vision is for the UK research system to be outstanding in conducting and promoting rigorous and transparent research. It pursues this by supporting collaboration between and among researchers, institutions, funders, and other stakeholders, so they are better able to conduct and promote rigorous, reproducible, and transparent research. This includes: identifying the factors that affect research rigour and transparency; identifying, sharing, and integrating effective practice; supporting a culture of continual improvement; providing training and support; coordinating action (including with similar networks internationally); supporting inter- and trans-disciplinary research; influencing actors across the research system; and offering constructive challenge.
The post-holder will play a leading role in a small team that will conduct two research projects that have been agreed and funded by a consortium of UK universities within the UKRN. The two projects are:
- An investigation of the factors affecting institutions as they develop sustainable arrangements to support open/transparent research data
- An investigation of how best to improve the use of applied meta-research evidence in institutional decision-making affecting research culture, rigour and transparency
The post-holder will contribute significantly to work to plan, implement, deliver, disseminate and evaluate these projects, led by a research fellow and supported by a project coordinator, in the context of the national UKRN and of the TARG research group ‘meta-research’ stream at Bristol. They will also actively explore further meta-research opportunities and collaboration.
This position is on an open-ended contract with fixed funding currently available until 31/07/2024, with the possibility of extension.
- Contribute ideas, including enhancements to the technical or methodological aspects of the studies, to the research project, thus providing substantial ‘added value’.
- Determine and deploy appropriate methodologies for research, with advice and support.
- Assess research findings for the need/scope for further investigations.
- Write up research work for publication, with appropriate support, in respected journals or equivalent and/or contribute as a team member to larger publications.
- Present research findings, either at conferences or seminars appropriate to the discipline.
- Contribute to grant applications submitted by others.
- You have significant previous experience of independent research (or transferable skills gained from professional or clinical experience combined with some experience or an awareness of the research environment).
- You have high-level analytical skills.
- You have good understanding of the dimensions of research culture, their significance and inter-relations.
- You have deep knowledge of, and experience in, senior-level decision-making within research institutions such as universities.
- You have knowledge of the roles and skills of professional and technical staff involved in supporting open research, research integrity, transparency and rigour.

We recently launched our strategy to 2030 tying together our mission, vision and values.
The University of Bristol aims to be a place where everyone feels able to be themselves and do their best in an inclusive working environment where all colleagues can thrive and reach their full potential. We want to attract, develop, and retain individuals with different experiences, backgrounds and perspectives – particularly people of colour, LGBT+ and disabled people - because diversity of people and ideas remains integral to our excellence as a global civic institution.
