Why Odysee Exists

You would hope that's less about people using mean words and spicy content getting yeeted, and more about targeted or sustained harassment and abuse that stifles the experience of others... You would hope.

seems like a bit of an open door. not too worried yet but that caught my attention too. for now i assume they are referring to the usual stuff like illegal things.

Same, it's the slippery slope to banning anyone and everyone who doesn't toe the line. As much as I hate anti-Semites and other morons, they have the right to exist and say whatever the fuck they want, just like anyone else. As long as they keep to banning things like death threats or targeted harassment, then it's cool. Probably not the case though. I'm sure I'll be kicked for being an asshole with a statement like that. Can't hurt anyone's feelings on the internet or you're just a bad person :)
This unwillingness to step on toes and speak your mind to avoid offending others, is how we ended up with people being forced to take experimental shots to feed their family. If I see ban hammers flying, Odysee will lose all support from me (and most likely anyone with half a brain) for the rest of it's short days.

I believe there is a place for anything goes, but odysee doesn't have to be that. I presume I speak for lots of odysee users when I say I don't want; low-brow trolling, p*rn, unwarranted harassment, etc. and that seems to be the stuff excluded from the free speech that "promotes creativity, comedy, and intelligent discussions."

Me too... but the good news is that if they do something stupid, a fork can always happen to allow a migration. And they have to know this is a serious threat.

It is OK if really bad things are banned. Calls to violence, theft, etc, that people can universally agree are bad. But outside of that, it should be anything goes.

I have transitioned most of my YouTube subscriptions over to this platform to escape censorship, but now I'm sceptical and will start to consider other platforms as this only suggests to me that they plan to copy YouTube with censorship once they become big enough that they will be more than happy to copy all the things that many of us hate about YouTube.
I will no longer recommend Odysee to others as I think it's gonna be no better than YouTube within the next few years.

They would still be 10x better than Youtube even if they adopted some of these policies in a mild way, but yes, if that happened there would be a mass exodus nonetheless. Right now only the channel owner can delete their own comments, or ban people from their channel. As long as THAT doesnt change LBRY will still be a good platform, it just wont be great anymore if they start promoting forced diversity garbage, etc.

IMO the best policy is to just stay out of politics completely, I wish some platform would do this, but I am not aware of any.

I agree completely that the choice of words used is specifically what worries me. "Inclusive" is generally a word used by SJW extremists, frequently used to accuse a person of being a bigot. There are many other words like this that are red flags, such as "diversity", "equity", capitalizing "black" (but refusing to capitalize "white"), and even the word "justice" now is an instant alarm bell. "Justice" especially is dangerous, because people are essentially claiming that their view is not an opinion, but rather the one and only MORALLY CORRECT view, and everyone else is evil...very dangerous view to have, same mindset that literal suicide bombers have.

People like MLK would be ashamed of the current SJWs, ironically. He wanted us to be colorblind, not force people to have more of certain races by pseudo-blackmail/threat of vioence, not shout our ethnicity over a bull horn. He would also be appalled at folks labeling "diversity" as literally anything but white people or men, and would be the first to call them out as hypocrites .

Anyway, hopefully we do not see any more of this sort of language in the future.

WTF, they make a huge move like that, where essentially the face of LBRY is now controlled by someone we don't know, and not a word? No announcement? Ok, now THAT worries me! If this new guy controls Odysee and he adds a bunch of new rules, but LBRY itself is still being developed by the original devs, perhaps in the future that would cause a mass exodus from Odysee and people would use the LBRY for PC instead for the full uncensored LBRY network experience, and the dream could be preserved that way, or by a newer front (Madiator is P2P only I believe, so it wouldnt work as a complete substitute as the new main front end to replace Odysee).

I will listen to the episode in full before forming any concrete opinions, but I do not have a good feeling.

This is wrong. Let me clarify.

The parent company is LBRY Inc., which were the original developers of the LBRY protocol, the Lbry.tv website (now closed), and the Odysee.com website.

Odysee is now its own company, however, it is still owned by LBRY Inc. This new company, Odysee, will work in a more independent fashion, but LBRY Inc. is still the owner, which will focus more on the decentralized LBRY protocol.

The LBRY Foundation does not own anything. This is a community-run non-profit whose task is to promote adoption of LBRY (ideally it promotes the protocol but it basically also promotes Odysee). The LBRY Foundation receives some LBC from LBRY Inc. to help promote LBRY, but it's actually a separate thing, not part of LBRY Inc. nor Odysee.

Bruh, thanks for the info. Are there any news about a new video player/portal that is directly under LBRY control? Because if Odysee became its own entity for whatever reason (means they don't agree with the vision of free speech and decentralization apparently), then there should be an alternative in the works that would allow peeps to upload their creative content onto servers without hosting on their own. I wonder why did LBRY TV died and I hope the alternative comes sooner than later.

To some extend Jeremy needs to delegate to others in order to scale. It can only become bigger if they find a bigger team. But there has to be somthing like a guidline of rules that shouldn't be changed.

I think thats fair since Odysee isnt supposed to be censorship resistant, LBRY is. People who want a functional and attractive decentralized platform should rally behind improving the LBRY client and protocol.

I agree. The amount of BS that Odysee has been spreading recently points towards completely incompetent leadership. Seems they are not sure themselves where they want to be heading. I think LBRY is basically kicking them out which is a good thing. Keep in mind they have not made any concrete policy changes yet, as of now LBRY is still 100% free speech friendly, and only the channel owner can delete comments. But yes, I agree that this could possibly be what they are insinuating for the future. Let's hope they clarify their intentions and prove us to be wrong.

I think I understand the nature of the problem.
Bit-chute as an example, although I was liking the concept. Is at this stage just functioning as an asylum. It's just housing people who say the opposite of what any rational person would say, just because they feel the necessity to exercise that right. But the result of that is that you don't engage with rational people. So the platform ends up functioning as a screaming pit, instead of a real place of conversation.

Having their political opposition scream endlessly into the void, instead of an interested audience. Is exactly what certain party's are looking to achieve.

IMO, bans should ONLY ever be for illegal content, doxxing, spam bots, or direct threats of violence/death (not random "stfu ill kill u bitch" comments, but things like "i know you work at _, I'm gonna pay you a visit after work once your wife __ swings by and shoot you"). For "harassment" or "toxic" comments people can just block them, or channel owners can moderate their own comments section if they so choose. But the admins of the site shouldnt be stepping in unless there is something illegal, danger, or doxxed personal info.

If you are going to have banning/censorship, it should only be reserved for what is criminal or illegal.
