Why Odysee Exists
Odysee officially launched almost a year ago. Since then, there's been a lot of confusion about this website and its purpose, especially with the rise of other so-called "YouTube Alternatives." We're often lumped in with these other sites and spoken about as one giant blob who all have the same motivations, goals, and ideals.
There's one problem: we don't.
Odysee's Creation & YouTube
We started Odysee because we love what YouTube used to be and hate what it's turned into over the past few years.
Early YouTube was a place full of creativity, comedy, talent, and more. It was the perfect platform for independent creators, which is why it exploded in popularity the way it did.
Around 2016, YouTube began prioritizing corporate channels and giving them special privileges with things like higher ad rates and preference in the recommendation system.
Channels who were previously able to express themselves creatively were now being forced to self-censor, remove old videos, or completely change their content out of fear of demonetisation or being banned.
YouTube turned from being a website for the average person to a corporate hellhole almost overnight.
Odysee's Purpose
Odysee exists to recapture what YouTube once was before this shift. What does this mean, exactly?
- Creative people are free to express their creativity
- We stand for independent creators, not corporate media outlets
- Everyone is welcome here
What Odysee Isn't
Odysee isn't motivated by politics. We don't exist to be a Right-wing or Left-wing website.
With that being said, do we care if political creators and users use Odysee? Of course not! Anyone can look at the News & Politics tab and see we have a wide array of political channels.
Also, we don't refer to ourselves as a free speech platform. We err on the side of free speech the majority of the time, because it's a necessary part of achieving our vision for this platform and because we're generally against censorship, but we don't claim to be a free speech platform, open platform, or anything else.
We believe in free speech to the extent that it promotes creativity, comedy, and intelligent discussions. We're not an "anything goes" platform, and toxic behavior that prevents us from fostering an inclusive community isn't welcome here.
You can view our community guidelines .
Side note: Odysee is not LBRY.
Why Odysee Exists
Odysee exists to be a video platform for independent creators, not corporate media outlets.
We want creative people to have the autonomy they need to be creative.
Allowing free discourse and political discussions that wouldn't be allowed elsewhere is a result of this, but it isn't our reason for existing.
Odysee is a welcoming place for everyone.
