Introduction

The new technologies do not replace human skills but they required different kinds of human skills.  Work has more and more become a matter of mental rather than physical workload. This can easily be seen when we are using everyday products e.g., mobile phone, ATM or computer application software. People believed that modern computer-aided technology has reduced their mental workload but in fact, it has increased their mental workload and it also weakened their social support (Sharma, 1999).

The very gadgets designed to make life easier can actually cause an added dimension of stress. It's frustrating when the faxes, e-mails, and voice mails pile up; annoying when phones don't stop ringing; and infuriating when equipment breaks down.

Prediction is made that psychosomatic syndromes in the workplace will most likely increase in the future due to the rapid changes currently transcending working life (Arnetz & Wiholm, 1997).
Benefits
Automation can carry out dangerous  operations and avoid injury to humans 
Automation can also carry out functions that are impossible for humans to perform 
It can also take over tasks that are burdensome or can cause fatigue

Mental Workload
The skill crucial in the performance of the operator is hindered by the increase in processing load resulting from the additional task of collecting information about the system state. 
Different aspects of human performance have been examined and the focus of the most empirical is mental workload,complacency, and skill degradation.
Automation Complacency
The complacency effect was eliminated when the reliability of the automation was variable, alternating between high and low, or when the automated task was the only task. An “attitude towards automation which allows operators to ‘trust’ the automation as a strategy for dealing with high workloads. 
Skill Degradation
A study indicated that high system reliability reduces workload, resulting in automation-induced complacency.
Mental Workload and Human Performance
The concept of an optimal level of mental burden is based on attentional resource theory, which states that a mismatch between demands and capabilities can induce psychological strain.
 If the demands of a work exceed the operator's limited attentional capability. This can be exacerbated if the operator becomes anxious, as stress is a resource-intensive state that can exacerbate cognitive interference.
The operator's performance is hampered by the increased processing load caused by the additional work of gathering system state information.
Those who are prone to stress or weariness may discover that their performance suffers when they are underloaded, as they are unable to mobilize compensating effort in a timely manner to meet the expectations.
Mental underload can cause performance to deteriorate due to a reduction in attentional resources.
Stress and Human Performance
 Stress can be directly effect on humans immune system and also can be make them feel depressed and poor health habits.
There are many reports about pressure and the perceived ability to drive enthusiasm in linear human increase and that the relationship of stimulus with performance is less satisfactory. 
stress can also stem from one’s emotions and lack of motivation in a person.
