I've sometimes stared at the few photographs of Schopenhauer. His features and expression reveal much. So very "pessimistic" looking. It also appears he was doomed by fate to never "make it with the ladies" in the first place. So he became a spectator instead of a participant. We all know guys like that.
What Schop was able to observe, theorize and reveal about human behavior, from his position of detachment, will always be relevant. As long as there are people physically unattractive in the world, there will be psychological suffering. To be shunned your whole life by members of the opposite sex would make this world a Hell for those who are of heterosexual orientation.
I think this is why Schopenhauer considered pity to be the only authentic human emotion. Feeling sorry for another human being's condition, getting that empathetic jolt to one's heart for another persons suffering is really the only emotion that might save us all from the torments of this world. And if you think about it, that "empathetic jolt" is all that's left of being human. Once that's gone, I think we're done.
Good video. An outstanding effort. Some provocative and informative thought here. Thanks. [show more]
Very theatrical
Would you prefer him to read it in a monotone voice and without any facial expressions?
Very binary of you
That doesnt answer my question, would you prefer the other extreme?
(Im aware that there are more than two options, btw.)
