Natural Animal Glues

From skin, nerves, bones and many other animal components of cattle, pigs, rabbits and also fish, one can obtain the usual glues, which are mostly named after their raw material. The harder the glue, the stronger the bond. The more elastic, the lower the adhesive strength. A good compromise is good bovine skin glue or fish glue which are both elastic and strong. Stronger than most modern adhesives, animal glues are used in traditional woodworking and painting technique. Soaked in water and then heated in a water bath, they are used warm, and gel when left to cool. In woodworking, their watersolubility makes them reversible, while their open time allows for repositioning. In painting technique, they are used both as a size for canvas and boards, and in tempera paints. Animal glues vary in strength. Always make the minimum strength required - as a guide, a set jelly should be somewhere between hard set and liquid.

Note
The quality of a glue bond depends not only on the quality of the glue, but also on the preparation and the method of processing. The glue will only stick if both surfaces are warmer than the gelation point of the glue. When the glue dries in the glue joint, it must not move. Prolonged heating and the addition of water can change the properties in an uncontrolled manner.

Hide Glue, cubes (#63020)

High jelly strength, made from cow hide. The glue is a natural product. The coloration can therefore always vary slightly.

Hide Glue, liquid (#63540)

Protein-based adhesive for wood, paper, leather or textiles. The liquid hide glue is particularly characterized by its good durability and flexibility.

Glue penetrations can be stained and painted over and therefore do not form visible stains. The hide glue is ready for use at room temperature and can be processed immediately.

Rabbit Skin Glue, cubes (#63025)

Made from rabbit hide. The glue is a natural product. The coloration can therefore always vary slightly.

Rabbit Skin Glue, fine grind (#63028)

Made from rabbit hide, especially suitable for making gesso.

Due to changes in the manufacturing process this lot contains a small amount of white particles which enhance the glue's stability.

Fish Glue blend, discolored (#63080)

Fish Glue is suitable for all applications where high elasticity and very high strength must be combined.

One particular advantage is the strong adhesion to wood, ceramic and metal. This fish glue is a warm glue!

Fish Glue liquid (#63550)

Fish glue is suitable for all applications where particularly high elasticity must go hand in hand with very high strength. A particular advantage is the great adhesion of fish glue to wood, ceramics and metal.

Fish glue can also be used in concentrated form on cold substrates. Our fish glue is cooked from unrotten fish remains, which is why the smell of fish glue is not unpleasant.

Salianski Kremer Isinglass Glue, Sturgeon glue (#63110)

Sturgeons bladder glue, which has been used as a fastener and adhesive in Russia for many centuries, is made from the inner membrane of the air bladder of sturgeons.

The advantage of this glue over other animal glues is its higher adhesion and lower viscosity. The swim bladders come from sustainable and secured breeding.

Sturgeon Glue, cleaned (#63114)

The ready-to-use and storable glue sticks are handmade in the Color-Mill. No preservative is added. It can be crushed and dissolved in warm water as needed.

To suppress mold growth, 0,2% Biodocarb (#78744) can be added. The swim bladders come from sustainable and secured breeding.
