Did your brain fall out of your head, Yglesias? The choice is have Twitter throttled in its entirety or limit access to some tweets. Which one do you want?

I agree with this move by Twitter because of this very reason. My one request would be for a public announcement regarding the reasons for the block. Transparency would go a long way.

Have it throttled entirely if you were ever serious anout free speech.
Folks, this isn't "complying with local laws." Sudden requests to censor political opponents are not compatible with anyone or any platform that espouses free speech. Local laws that are reasonable, like direct incitement or threats of violence, are understandable. Silencing… さらに表示

Q: So how worried should we be about @lindayacc as the new Twitter CEO?

If only it were that simple. We need to support Twitter instead of dunking on it every time we hit a speed bump. Look around, this was never going to be easy.

Unfortunately, Twitter has to comply with the laws in the countries in which it operates.
It is kind of a hard spot to be in.
But it doesn't have to operate in countries that are hostile to liberty.
Choosing to leave would be preferable to compromising the integrity of the platform.

has to follow the laws of countries. Failure to comply could even result in the arrest of employees living in those countries. Not every country is America, not every country has freedom of speech.

Bad take elon. This is outright election interference if it helps one side over the other. The right decision would have been to disable twitter altogether until after the elections, so that neithet side benefits.

If you were actually complying in a request for censorship to help the government win the election then clearly you should not have complied. Pretty much no matter what.

Well at least your admitting it’s about money and not free speech.

I mean what are you to do in that situation? It would literally result in the loss of access or usability for all those in that country if their govt followed thru with their threats.
At least you notify the individuals in accordance with your policy.
Let’s just hope we don’t… さらに表示

Sounds like a violation of the First Amendment to me
throttling all would be better than giving Erdogan an unfair advantage, no???
He was against it before he was for it. I don't want the left or the right censored. I pick up gold nuggets from all sides.
Elon I disagree. This is that slippery slope you are trying to avoid. Now all governments can use the same threats to get the censorship they want, unless I’m missing something?
And this will be Elons response when his new CEO limits tweets at critical times before our elections. Elon-Hey, yeah, we blocked conservative accounts, it was a no-brainer.
Matty wants you to do nothing and in return Turkish people have ZERO access to twitter when government censors it in response. Real galaxy brain stuff. Turkey isn’t the US. I think most understand you can’t do the same there that you’d do here. Pragmatism = keep as much access to… さらに表示
He never had one, so non-existent objects don’t fall.
Come to Turkiye again, Elon. I’ll buy a Tesla. Promise.
If you’re wondering why Pepe is trending again, think of Kek as a god and Pepe as that god’s son, returning.
This first sentence should be the response to all Matt Yglesias tweets.
Why is this even a thing ?
If a government doesn't like what's online, instead of burdening you ...they should invest in their own great firewall of china, and do the blocking themselves
This look like a lazy, and cheap way to put the fault and financial burden on others...
Yglesias is right on this one.
You just negotiated with a terrorist.
All or nothing, and let the government face the backlash. If you can’t stand on this basic principle, what can you stand on?
Twitter throttled entirely. Was this supposed to be a trick question?
Let it be throttled and have the government explain why to the people.
And yet you allow Taliban to promote terrorism/suicide bombing in this platform. Not just that, now they are doing it with blue check mark.
