Facebook has officially discontinued the Metaverse and NFT projects. The company, which officially changed its name to Meta, now has a new ambition, namely Artificial Intelligence (AI).
This change has been about 1.5 years since Facebook changed its name to Meta. At that time, the company confirmed that it would work on a new sector called Metaverse.
However, the success of ChatGPT and the AI sector wars carried out by many large technology companies seem to shake CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s heart. Recently in a letter to employees, he stated the company’s “biggest single investment” was to advance its AI strategy.
Zuckerberg explained that his company already has the infrastructure to deliver AI. He called it an ‘unprecedented scale’.
Indeed, there is no further clarity regarding Meta’s AI ambitions. However, TechRadar notes that Zuckerberg’s letter alludes to creative expression and the discovery of new content, so there are several uses for it.
The 38-year-old entrepreneur also writes about the differences between AI and Metaverse, which he says provide a realistic sense of presence.
Meanwhile, Meta has again carried out mass layoffs for its 10,000 employees. In line with this layoff, Zuckerberg also explained that he would restructure the distribution of employees at each company.
Also, Meta will cancel lower priority projects. Finally, the company will also reduce hiring.
The hope is that in April, Meta will be able to announce restructuring and layoffs. While in the business group at the end of May.
“Overall, we expect to reduce our team size by approximately 10,000 people and close approximately 5,000 additional open roles that we have not yet hired,” he explained.
